[Review] Family Matters

We’re back with a new K-drama review and this time we watched the 2024 ‘Family Matters’,

Family Matters (2024) is a thrilling South Korean series that beautifully combines action, mystery, and emotional depth. With a unique premise revolving around a group of individuals with extraordinary abilities, the show masterfully explores themes of survival, identity, and the complexities of family dynamics. The story centers on Han Young-Soo, played by the incredible Bae Doona, who escapes from a harsh training facility together some others and they move around the country to hide their identities.

What stands out most about ‘Family Matters’ is the way it balances intense action with heartwarming, relatable moments. The dynamic between the characters, including the father (Ryoo Seung-bum), grandfather (Baek Yoon-sik), and two teenage siblings (Lomon and Lee Su-hyun), creates a powerful emotional core that drives the story. Despite the tension between their fake roles and their real selves, the characters begin to form deep bonds of trust and love. These evolving relationships offer a refreshing depth to the series, grounding the high-stakes drama in human emotion and vulnerability.

The series is also a thrilling ride, filled with dangerous situations and sinister criminals that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The characters’ unique abilities are used in interesting ways, making for a visually exciting experience. The show’s exploration of loyalty, family, and the struggle to maintain one’s humanity in a world filled with deception and danger is both thought-provoking and engaging.

Released on Coupang Play from November to December 2024, ‘Family Matters’ is a gripping, heartwarming, and emotionally rich series that deftly combines the tension of a thriller with the profound exploration of what it means to truly belong. The cast’s stellar performances and the gripping storyline make it an absolute must-watch.
