‘Dark Nuns’ is a gripping and atmospheric supernatural thriller that expands the universe introduced in the 2015 film ‘The Priests’, while firmly establishing its own identity. Directed by Kwon Hyeok-jae, this 2025 spin-off takes the concept of exorcism in Korean cinema to a fascinating new place: placing two nuns at the heart who both have ties to shamanism in their own way.
The story follows Sister Junia (Song Hye-kyo), a compassionate but fiercely determined nun who believes a young boy, Hee-joon (Moon Woo-jin), has been possessed by a powerful evil spirit. As Hee-joon begins to unravel under the weight of the supernatural , Sister Junia is joined by Sister Michaela (Jeon Yeo-been), a more skeptical figure whose curiosity and courage grow alongside the threat they face.
What truly elevates ‘Dark Nuns’ is the central dynamic between the two leads. Song Hye-kyo delivers a nuanced, emotionally resonant performance that captures Junia’s inner struggle from past traumas. Jeon Yeo-been, as Michaela, provides a compelling counterbalance — rational, sharp, and quietly tormented. Together, they bring depth and authenticity to a genre that can easily slip into cliches.
What makes ‘Dark Nuns’ stand out is its reimagining of who holds spiritual power and what that power is. Nuns as exorcists with ties to shamanism is a fresh narrative hook. It’s thrilling and refreshing to watch.
The only real drawback is that the film leaves you wanting more time with these characters. There are hints of rich backstories and past traumas that are only partly explored. The world of ‘Dark Nuns’ is so compelling that an extra 20 minutes would have been welcome.
