‘Scandal Makers’ is one of those feel-good Korean movies that’s impossible not to smile through. Directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol in his feature debut, the film perfectly balances comedy, family drama, and heartwarming moments, making it easy to see why it became such a massive hit when it was released.
The story follows Nam Hyeon-soo (Cha Tae-hyun), a former teen idol who has traded the spotlight for a career as a popular radio DJ. His comfortable, bachelor lifestyle is turned upside down when a young woman, Hwang Jeong-nam, who later reveals her real name is Jae-in (Park Bo-young), shows up at his door claiming to be his daughter. As if that isn’t enough of a shock, she also arrives with her young son, Ki-dong (Wang Seok-hyeon), instantly making Hyeon-soo both a father and a grandfather overnight.
What follows is a hilarious series of misunderstandings as Hyeon-soo desperately tries to keep this newfound family a secret to protect his image. Of course, things never go according to plan, and the film finds plenty of comedy in his increasingly desperate attempts to avoid a public scandal. But underneath all the laughs is a genuinely sweet story about accepting responsibility and discovering what family really means.
The chemistry between the three leads is easily the film’s biggest strength. Cha Tae-hyun is effortlessly funny as the reluctant father whose selfishness slowly gives way to genuine affection. Park Bo-young brings so much warmth and sincerity to Jae-in that it’s impossible not to root for her. And then there’s Wang Seok-hyeon as little Ki-dong, who absolutely steals every single scene he’s in. He is utterly adorable, and his natural charm gives the film so much of its heart.
As the story progresses, the comedy gradually gives way to more emotional moments, but it never feels overly sentimental. Instead, it strikes a lovely balance between humor and heartfelt family bonds, making Hyeon-soo’s growth feel both believable and rewarding.
