[Patreon Exclusive Review] Color Rush

In today’s Patreon exclusive review, I am sharing my thoughts about a short web drama, with an interesting story that includes human nature in certain conditions. Let’s chat about ‘Color Rush’.

Starting off

When it comes to BL (short for Boy Love), I enjoy watching healthy relationships that go against the stereotype of LGTBG+ relationships. For ‘Color Rush’ they decided to take a rather dramatic approach with cuteness, and it was refreshing to watch because it doesn’t quite follow the stereotypes in most BL series.

Starring Yoo Jun as Choi Yeon Woo and Heo Hyun Jun as Go Yoo Han, ‘Color Rush’ tells the story of Yeon Woo, a school student who suffers from a neurological disease that prevents him from seeing colors, he is only able to see shades of whites, grey and black.

In the world where Yeon Woo lives, “Mono” is the term used for people with the same eyesight limitations. “Monos” are expected to become obsessive and dangerous once they meet their soulmates or “Probes”, who are the only ones able to cause a color rush on them allowing them to see colors.

When a Mono meets its Probe, going back to see just grays, whites and black, puts them on edge. That’s why many of the stories in this world have ended with Monos killing their Probes.

Yeon Woo after seeing his mother who is also a Mono disappears, chooses to never meet his Probe. He doesn’t want to become the obsessive monster he sees in the news.

Mono meets Probe

Yeon Woo transfers to a new school and there he meets Yoo Han, an idol trainee, with a quirky and flirty personality. When they meet, the first thing that Yoo Han says to Yeon Woo is how beautiful he is, and from there a rather complicated bromance starts.

Yoo Han basically follows Yeon Woo when they are at school, one day he takes his face mask off and Yeon Woo experiments his first color rush. Yoo Han takes him to the school nurse’s office and he discovers that he is Yeon Woo’s Probe.

Yohan wants to get closer to Yeon Woo, and starts showing him colors every time he can. He gets used to the color rush he experiences and starts to desire spending most time with his Probe, but he is afraid he will become obsessed.

Yeon Woo’s guardian and aunt (Lee Min Ji), is on the search for her sister, she gets a call and has to leave town for a few days, however the unexpected happens.

(trigger warning: suicide attempt)

Afraid to hurt Yoo Han and become obsessive, Yeon Woo prepares everything to commit suicide. He doesn’t want to become the monster Monos are meant to be. He decides to do it, and his aunt finds him when it is almost too late.

Destiny

Yeon Woo wakes up in a psychiatric facility that will help him recover from his self-harm attempt. He is pulled out of school and his aunt plans to move out of the city, so he won’t have to see Yoo Han again.

One evening, Yoo Han shows up and asks Yeon Woo to leave far away with him, both guys prepare everything and leave the medical institution.

The guys go off to the coast, where they can talk alone about what happened, Yeon Woo confesses that he likes Yoo Han but doesn’t want to become a monster. Yoo Han also confesses that he suffers from a disease that doesn’t allow him to distinguish faces but he can see Yeon Woo’s.

Yoo Han tells him that they are meant to be, they are soulmates, he can only see his face, and Yeon Woo can only see colours when he is with him, making them the perfect match for each other.

Final thoughts

Color Rush’ was a short but sweet drama that focused more on the development of the characters’ relationship rather than their love one. The chemistry between Yoo Jun and Hyun Jun was fantastic and they were super cute together.

Hyun Jun’s character was more flirty and straight forward than Yoo Jun’s one and that made the perfect balance in this drama.

‘Color Rush’ is free to watch on Viki and you can check out the trailer below.
