K-Variety Taster: The Village Barber

Within the world of K-variety, there’s a genre we absolutely adore, short-form healing shows centered around comfort, storytelling, and genuine human connection. In this edition, we want to spotlight a series that perfectly captures that atmosphere. Let’s talk about ‘The Village Barber’.

What makes the story behind this show especially meaningful is how personal it is to its cast. During his mandatory military service, actor Park Bo-gum obtained a barber certification with the goal of using the skill to volunteer and help the elderly. In 2025, he began planning a project that could turn that intention into reality.

Wanting to share the experience with close friends, Bo-gum invited actors Lee Sang-yi and Kwak Dong-yeon to join the adventure. Together with the production team, they searched for the perfect village location, renovated the selected space, and created a barber shop that could continue serving the local community even after filming ended.

Slow Life and Genuine Connections

From its very first episode, ‘The Village Barber’ stands out for its sincerity. The show beautifully captures the charm of countryside life, focusing on heartfelt conversations and everyday moments rather than dramatic entertainment.

Bo-gum, Sang-yi, and Dong-yeon spend their days listening to the stories of elderly residents, young families, and children from the village. The interactions feel natural and unforced, creating a comforting atmosphere where warmth and kindness take center stage.

At the same time, the trio experience the realities of running a small business. From providing haircuts and nail services to preparing food and helping around the village, they gradually adapt to the slower rhythm of rural life while doing their best to care for their customers.

For the show, Lee Sang-yi even obtained a nail technician license to expand the shop’s services, while Kwak Dong-yeon became the group’s unofficial chef, keeping everyone well-fed with homemade meals and snacks throughout their adventures.

Guests That Added Even More Warmth

The series also features several guest appearances from actors and celebrities who temporarily join the barber shop as part-timers. Among them are Park Hae-joon, Choi Dae-hoon, Kim So-hyun, Rain, and Yoon Nam-no.

These guests bring an extra layer of charm to the show, blending naturally into village life and creating wholesome interactions with both the cast and residents. Through these moments, viewers get to see a more candid and human side of the celebrities involved.

Why You Should Watch It

The Village Barber’ is the definition of a healing variety show. It’s warm, funny, heartfelt, and filled with touching life stories that stay with you long after each episode ends.

With a second season already confirmed, we’re excited to see where Bo-gum and the team will head next on their volunteering journey.
