K-Drama Review: My Holo Love

Netflix has brought us a new rom-com with a technologic twist in the series ‘My Holo Love’. Over the past year this streaming company has been producing great dramas. Something I’m not a fan of is when the production gets split into 2 seasons (Join the rant in the link, I’m not the only one needing closure in the dramas I watch). However, this time, as a drama lover I’m happy with the quality and storytelling they delivered to the small screen.

Written by Ryu Yong-jae, Kim Hwan-chae and Choi Sung-joon and directed by Lee Sang-yeop and Yoon Jong-ho. ‘My Holo Love’ tells the story of Han So-yeon (Ko Sung-hee) a regular girl who is stuck to a reclusive lifestyle because of a disease she suffers, and Go Nan-do (Yoon Hyun-min) a developer with a complicated past who invents the AI program Holo.

In the story, Holo physically resembles Go Nan-do, but has a more candid personality in contrast with its creator, but people are only able to see him if they are wearing the Holo Glasses.

The glasses end up in So-yeon’s bag after Nan-do’s sister is being chased. And the story develops around Holo developing characteristics of a human personality as he spends more and more time with So-yeon.

The Actors

I’m not very familiar with Ko Sung-hee and Yoon Hyun-min’s works, but I really enjoyed the acting and chemistry between them in this drama. They both pull off the personalities of the characters extremely well and I felt a lot of empathy for them  as their story unfolded.

I decided to watch the drama after seeing Choi Yeo-jin and Hwang Chan-sung were part of the cast. I am very familiar with their previous work and they are incredible in the roles they play in this story. As supporting actors this series has the legendary Lee Jung-eun, and this actress is SO GOOD and she knows how to pick her roles so well that I just had to watch it.

All the roles were well played, and I really liked the interactions and stories in the plotline, they made this drama flow well and stopped it from dragging out.

AI in Dramas

I have already watched a couple of dramas with the same topic of artificial intelligence and I can say that ‘My Holo Love’ is one of the best ones I have watched so far. The story does develop around the artificial intelligence concept, but at the same time it doesn’t fully focus on it but rather makes it an element of the storyline.

The plot puts more focus on the inter-personal stories of the characters as well as their backgrounds, and adds the AI as an element that makes it more enjoyable and different.

Overall, I felt that Netflix did a great job with this drama, it didn’t split it in two seasons (Thankfully) and had a steady flow. If you want to have a glimpse of it, you can check out the trailer below.
