[Indie Pick] KYUL

We’re back with a new Indie Pick, this time we’re taking a closer look at indie artist KYUL. If you’re looking for a lovely mix between Indie and R&B, definitely stick around. KYUL writes, composes and produces his own work himself.

Debut

KYUL debuted in 2018 with the indie mini-album ‘Mirror’. The title track with the same title is a beautiful piece with lovely piano, KYUL’s soothing vocals and interesting textural snaps.

In the same mini-album there’s a bit of a jazzy piano section in the track ‘Alone’ which I am obsessed by.

KYUL also came out with a couple of singles in the same year. There were the singles ‘Fade Out’, ‘Silence’ and ‘Enough’. I particularly enjoyed ‘Silence’ because of the interesting layering with the waves, piano and strings.

Mini-albums

The man was very busy in 2019 as he released three mini-albums and a single. There’s the mini-album ‘Dreams’, ‘4’ and ‘Even Though We Are Not The Same’. The only single released that year was ‘Inside’.

‘The Last’ is the opening track of ‘Dreams’ and starts with such an interesting dissonance. I had to pause it for a second and rewind because it wasn’t as if I was expecting it. In comparison ‘That’s why’ feels a bit more quirkier and on the indie side of things.

His mini-album ‘4’ was co-produced by TM. He has composed songs for so many popular artists. He’s listed in the credits for RAIN, Sondia, VIXX and many more. If you need something on a grey day, listen to this because it feels like autumn in music.

The opening track ‘Keep the love alive’ is wonderful and sets off the right vibe from the start. It’s melancholic and just really well done.

Listening to his last mini-album of 2019, ‘Even Though We Are Not The Same’ is incredibly soothing.

His single ‘Inside’ feels so smooth. The guitar in this one is absolutely amazing and really drives the track forward and gives it that bluesy feel.

2020

The last year and a half he’s mostly released singles. There are a couple that I wanted to share with you. Some of these singles by KYUL were featured in my Weekly K-Indie Reports, so feel free to check those out.

Though I felt like I had to put some extra spotlight on the singles ‘Polaroid’, ‘Broken’ and ‘Someone You Used To Know’. Go check out the English translation of ‘Broken’ here.

KYUL has only released two singles in 2021 so far. He came out with ‘Forever’ and ‘We’re in love now’.

Go say hi on his Instagram. You can find him on Spotify here.
