[Indie Pick] 109

We’re back with a brand new Indie Pick, this time we’re writing about 109.

109 is a Korean indie singer-songwriter who debuted in 2017 with the single ‘I would like to tell’. Originally he was using his real name Chanyoung as stage name and debuted with that in 2015, with the single ‘Between ambiguities’.

His debut single as 109 was written, composed and arranged by himself. It’s all about being so in love that you can’t sleep.

After that he released the single ‘I think I’m fine’. The guitar line in this one is so, so pretty.

‘When I miss you’ was the single that followed that and it’s the first single that was co-written by 109. The other co-writer was singer-songwriter Twenty.

The single ‘You don’t have to be a star’ was his first release in 2019. It’s the single with the highest streams on his Spotify channel. It’s an emotional comfort song.

The first mini-album

109 came out with his first mini-album ‘We need to meet now’. This mini-album has one of my favorite songs on it. The track ‘Moon’ is what introduced me to him and made me fall in love a little with his vocals and his guitar playing. If you have time, I recommend listening to ‘Seoul’ as well, because it’s absolutely stunning.

His only collab so far is with Blueny of the group OuiOui.

The song ‘Sigh’ has a soft spot in my heart for me. The lyrics are beautiful and had me a bit choked up when I read them for the first time.

It’s okay so far
Good job
Drowned in
The hard days
Exhale with a sigh
I have nowhere to lean on
If you find a place to rest
I will always be here
Endure one day and tomorrow
Even if you can’t expect
Better than yesterday
It was today
It’s hard to get your heart out

The last song he released is ‘Lights out’. We also featured it in our Weekly K-Indie Report.

I really hope that you’ll check out some of his music. 109 has a really soulful, indie voice that helps transcend the message, even if you don’t speak the language. I sincerely hope he gets a bigger fandom.

Go ahead and check out his Instagram and his YouTube channel. You can find his Spotify channel here.
