EP Review: Sumin – OO DA DA

Today I’m coming back with an album review but instead of going into each of the songs of the EP I decided to take a different turn and give the different reason why I believe everyone should go and check out Sumin’s latest EP “OO DA DA”.

I’m not a music expert nor do I want to pretend I have some sort of technical insight about this album or its composition. As a listener and melomaniac I can definitely tell you the reasons why I’m absolutely obsessed with this new ‘genre’ that only Sumin can fit in, in today’s Korean music industry (though if you know any other artists similar to her, please let us know).

Let’s start off by introducing Sumin. She’s a singer, producer and creative director who has definitely created a new musical style: -’Neo K-pop’ that just she can pull off. Her latest release is full of tracks that will take you to a musical journey where you will try to fit each song in a genre, but the reality is that all of them are so different that it’s hard to fit them in one category, hence the new genre.

I discovered this EP while digging through the internet for new music. I found the video ‘OO DA DA’ which I thought was a song on its own, but it is actually a mix of all of the songs of the EP.

The video starts off with a short version of ‘Shaker’ transitioning to the next track ‘Meow’ in such a smooth way that it’s hard to know if they’re one full track or two separate ones. The next song is ‘Love Dance’. That’s probably my favorite one in the full EP. Near the end of the track, there is a sudden change of the beat from electro pop to a more instrumental one. I absolutely loved it because this change allows you to truly appreciate Sumin’s voice and it is an extremely cool and an almost jazzy transition.

‘Bee’ comes in with a sudden change of beat, but it is blended so well that it seems like a natural transition as if both tracks were just one. The next one that follows is ‘Pocket’ featuring Omega Sapiens. It’s a track mixed with vocals and rap verses with a touch of electro pop that I personally loved. ‘Stardust’ is the track that closes this musical journey and with this one you definitely see why Sumin fits into Neo K-pop, a genre that exists just for her.

The album itself is so diverse that it’s a joy to listen to, and as a fan of electronic music, R&B and Hip-hop (among others), it is always a treat to the ears listening to such a diverse an unexpected EP.

Here is the video for ‘OO DA DA’, once you have watched it you will understand everything written above:

I just hope to listen new music from this young and very talented artist. We need more of this style of music to delight ourselves. It is unexpected and unique and I personally love the genre and her music.

And you, have you listened to this EP? Let me know your opinion in the comments.
