[Review] DAY6 (Even of Day) – The Book of Us: Gluon – Nothing can tear us apart

The boys from DAY6 are back though this time as a sub-unit, DAY6 (Even of Day). The unit, consisting of Wonpil, Dowoon and Young K released the mini-album ‘The Book of Us: Gluon – Nothing can tear us apart’. The members Jae and Sungjin are on temporary hiatus due to health issues.

The Book of Us: Gluon – Nothing can tear us apart

We open the mini-album with ‘Landing – Intro -’ with DENIMALZ 3. The DENIMALZ are the stuffed animals representing the members from the official merchandise line. The intro basically takes us through take-off and launches us into space. It’s very electronic, but it’s utterly adorable.

After that we get ‘Landed’, which is very synth pop from the 80s and I’m kind of living for it. The vocals are fantastic but I wish they had changed the synth riff a little bit. It’s more or less the same throughout the full song and I think it would have been even better if they had played with that a bit more.

Next up is another DENIMALZ 3 collab. The ‘Ocean – interlude1 -’ is so mellow and soft. I really enjoyed the whistle they implemented. This is very cute.

‘Where the sea sleeps’ is the title track and came accompanied by a brand new music video. Please turn the captions on and cry together with me, please. This song is absolutely beautiful. If I ever hear this song live, I think the entire audience will be in tears. I also loved the fact that they added Sunjin’s and Jae’s DENIMALZ in the music video.

We slide back into the more electronic music with the next song ‘Forest – interlude2 -’, again with DENIMALZ 3. They’re done exploring and head back to the ship. I kind of wish they would have a full music video with every song on the mini-album, because there’s a whole plot here that I need visuals for.

The last full song on the mini-album is ‘Thanks to’. Young K and Wonpil harmonizing gives me life. This fits the cohesiveness of the entire mini very well. It’s a very lovely balance between the electronic driven sounds and the classic DAY6 vibe we’re used to.

‘To be continued -Outro-’ is the last song and is with the DENIMALZ 3 again. I’m loving that piano intro and the whole theatrical feel of it. I do kind of wonder how they would sing this live.

Overall

‘The Book of Us: Gluon – Nothing can tear us apart’ by DAY6 (Even of Day) is lovely, though I do miss Jae and Sungjin. Young K wrote pretty much all of the lyrics on the mini, with Wonpil as a co-writer on ‘Thanks to’. Wonpil has a lot of composing credits. One thing I do wish is that Dowoon had vocal lines, I would have loved that.
