EP Review: NU’EST – The Nocturne

The boy group NU’EST just released their eighth mini-album ‘The Nocturne’. This new album is bringing a new concept and side of this group. Their management Pledis Entertainment stated the following in relation to this EP:

“(…) The album focuses on “nightfall,” a moment that everyone encounters daily, when more honest emotions arise. The album unravels various aspects of the night, by realistically expressing emotions that many can relate to. Instead of portraying “nocturne” through the usual sentimental and gloomy mood, NU’EST uses various colors to express their emotions, illustrating “nocturne” as a song of the night (…)”

This overall concept just feels very interesting and unique, Pledis Entertainment also explained how with this release fans will be able to see a more mature side of NU’EST. And this full new dimension of the group has definitely caught my eye. Let’s wait no more and dive straight into the music.

The Nocturne

Moon Dance’ kicks this EP off with a pop ballad tempo and glorious vocals. I was struck by a cupid’s arrow with this song, there isn’t a single thing I don’t love about it. The low-pitched rapping got me shook and the full rhythm is just amazing.

The title track ‘I’m in Trouble’ is next with a more up-beat pop style, this song is definitely catchy and I can totally see why it was chosen as a title track. The bass line is dope! The music video is stunning, the visuals are out of this world! They played with color saturation, shades and lighting and the result was a visual piece of art. Check it down below.

Firework’ starts off with the electronic/synth beats and it is definitely a summer bop. This song is the perfect soundtrack for a pool party (whenever we get to have those). The vocals are great as usual and overall is a very enjoyable track.

Coming next is ‘Back To Me’ and I found this track’s layering very interesting. It is definitely a pop track but at certain points it feels like a ballad. It is an interesting mix that blended very well with the full feel and concept of this song.

‘Back To Me’ is the door opening for ‘Must’, this acoustic ballad has incredible vocals, and the delivery of the lyrics is super touching and emotional. The piano accompaniment enhances the full experience so be ready to tear up with this track.

Shooting Star’ is last on this release and this pop song will definitely lift your spirit after ‘Must’. Its tempo is bright and feels just like a happy track. It was a very interesting way to close this release but it fitted very well with the concept of this EP.
