Actor Spotlight: Ryu Seung Ryong

Ryu Seung Ryong is a Korean actor who’s been in the industry since 2004 where he played a burglar in ‘Someone Special’.

Beginnings

Ryu studied acting in Seoul. He’d seen a play at the tender age of fifteen and immediately decided that he’d be an actor. After graduating he was mostly in theatre and even spent five years performing a non-verbal theatre performance.

As mentioned before the film ‘Someone Special’ was the first time he appeared on screen at the age of 34. Take a look at his debut performance.

Movies

Ryu Seung Ryong’s focus seems to mostly lie on films. He’s only been in about eight dramas in the seventeen years he’s been in the industry.

He seems to slide between genres quite easily. Flying between police films and thrillers to comedy and drama.

In the next couple of years he quietly amasses an interesting filmography that I’m feeling very inclined to binge over a couple of weeks to be completely honest. There’s no distinction between big budget movies and small scale art projects. He’s done them all with equal vigor.

2012

I do think that the film ‘All About My Wife’ made a big impact for his career. The film was a box-office hit and sold more than four million tickets.

Ryu Seung Ryong had an amazing year in 2012, because the next film he did; ‘Masquerade’ sold a whopping ten million tickets.

If I didn’t mention my favorite films Miracle in Cell No.7’ and Extreme Job’ this feature wouldn’t be mine. These are still on my personal top 10 list of Korean movies and I can’t believe he’s the lead in both.

Series

The couple of series he’s performed in, have been all over the place, much like his films. His biggest role is the villain Jo Hak Joo in the first and second season of ‘Kingdom’.

He also played a role in the 2008 series ‘Painter of the wind’ which seems very interesting.

Ryu Seung Ryong seems like one of those actors that are so good at hiding themselves in their roles that if you don’t pay attention you wouldn’t realize just how interesting his career has been.
