Actor Spotlight: Kang Mal-geum

We’re back with a new Actor Spotlight and this time I really wanted to share the wonderful Kang Mal-geum. I recently watched ‘Sell Your Haunted House’ and I just absolutely love her, so I figured it was time to shine some of the spotlight on her.

Let’s take a closer look at her filmography

Debut

After graduating from Pusan National University she made her debut in the film ‘Yong-Tae: The Ordinary Memories’ in 2010.

The next couple of years she played both in a couple of short films and was active in the theatre scene. She had small roles in the films ‘The Chase’, ‘Daydream’ and ‘The Monologue’ which aired in 2017-2018.

Kang Mal-geum’s breakout role was in the film ‘Lucky Chan-sil’ that was released in 2019. She plays the very interesting character Lee Chan-sil who is suddenly jobless and questions her life choices after giving everything for her career and nothing for her private life. This movie is definitely on my to watch list because it sounds super interesting and won her several awards like the Baeksang Award for Best New Actress.

From then on she started getting more presence in K-dramas too. She had roles in ‘Beautiful World’, ‘Missing: The Other Side’ and ‘Please Don’t Date Him’.

2021 was a good year! She had roles in ‘Mouse’, the popular ‘Red Sleeve’ and ‘Sell Your Haunted House’ as mentioned before. Kang Mal-geum also had roles in Netflix’ ‘Squid Game’ and ‘The Silent Sea’.

This year she has acted in the series ‘Thirty-Nine’ and ‘Military Prosecutor Doberman’, the latter is still on the list to watch. I can’t wait.

I genuinely hope that Kang Mal-geum gets a role where she can really bite her teeth in, maybe something dark and dramatic. She is a very talented actress and I’d love to see more of her.
