In this edition of our drama review, we’re diving into a recent production that might give viewers a serious case of baby fever thanks to its overwhelming cuteness. Let’s talk about ‘Our Universe.’
Written by Soo Jin, Jeon Yu-ri, and Shin Yi-hyun, and directed by Lee Hyun-seok and Jung Yeo-jin, ‘Our Universe‘ tells the story of two people brought together by tragedy who must suddenly learn how to raise a child and build a life as an unexpected family.
The story begins with Woo Hyun-jin (Roh Jeong-eui), a recent college graduate determined to start her career and become financially independent from her older sister, who has taken care of her ever since their parents passed away.
On the other side, we meet Seon Tae-hyung (Bae In-hyuk), a talented rookie photographer with a painful past. As a child, he was abandoned by his older brother and left in an orphanage, a wound that has shaped much of his life. Because of this, Tae-hyung carries deep resentment toward the brother who left him behind.
Despite their different lives, Hyun-jin and Tae-hyung share one unexpected connection: their siblings are married, making them in-laws. Years earlier, Tae-hyung suddenly appears at a family dinner after learning about his brother’s marriage. During the tense gathering, he openly expresses his resentment and anger, shocking Hyun-jin and her sister before ultimately cutting ties with his brother completely.
Coming Together as Family
Years later, Hyun-jin finds herself struggling to find stable work. Frustrated and feeling lost, she meets with her sister, who offers to let her move back home until things improve. Hyun-jin, however, takes the offer as an insult to her independence and storms out, leaving their relationship strained.
Shortly afterward, tragedy strikes. Hyun-jin receives devastating news: her sister and brother-in-law have both passed away unexpectedly. The loss shatters her world.
Tae-hyung also learns about his brother’s death and attends the funeral, where he reunites with Hyun-jin. There, he discovers something he didn’t expect: his brother and Hyun-jin’s sister had a child.
Hyun-jin takes responsibility for her 20-month-old nephew Woo-ju (Park Yu-ho), who quickly becomes the center of her life. However, stepping into motherhood overnight proves far from easy. She must juggle job hunting, legal guardianship, and the overwhelming responsibility of raising a toddler.
At first, Tae-hyung makes it clear he wants nothing to do with the situation, asking Hyun-jin not to contact him. But life has other plans. When a sudden water leak forces him out of his apartment, he ends up temporarily staying with Hyun-jin and Woo-ju, an arrangement that slowly changes everything.
Growing Together
With Tae-hyung helping care for Woo-ju, Hyun-jin’s daily routine becomes more manageable, and she finally lands her dream job. The two begin sharing parenting responsibilities: Tae-hyung watches Woo-ju while she works, and Hyun-jin takes over in the evenings and weekends.
As they adjust to their new lives, Hyun-jin realizes that becoming a guardian isn’t just about providing financially, she must also grow emotionally closer to Woo-ju to truly understand his needs.
Meanwhile, her life becomes even more complicated when she reunites with her first love, Park Yoon-seong (Park Seo-ham), who turns out to be both her direct manager and her landlord. His support helps Hyun-jin and Woo-ju find stability, but Tae-hyung begins to feel uneasy about his presence.
Slowly, Tae-hyung comes to a realization he wasn’t expecting, his feelings for Hyun-jin have grown deeper than friendship.
Just as their fragile balance begins to settle, Tae-hyung’s estranged father is released from prison and reappears in their lives with questionable intentions, threatening the peaceful family they are building.
Despite the challenges, Hyun-jin and Tae-hyung remain determined to protect Woo-ju and give him the safe and loving home he deserves.
A Family Built From Loss
‘Our Universe’ delivers more than just adorable moments with the lovable baby Woo-ju. At its heart, the drama tells a touching story about grief, healing, and two people slowly learning how to become a family.
