[Review] Sungjin – 30

Sungjin from DAY6 finally released his solo debut album ‘30’. We’re beyond stoked and curious to see what he has in store for his solo sound. Let’s dive in!

30

We start off with the track ‘Covered in Love’ which is a soft pop rock ballad. The piano sounds warm and welcoming. Sungjin’s vocals are a delight as always, and he effortlessly tell us the story of his young wishes.

The title track ‘Check Pattern’ comes up next. What a beautiful track and a stunning music video.

I really enjoyed the rock ballad with the solid instrumentals that ebb and flow. This part of the song introduction was beautiful in the way it explained the song: “complicatedly intertwined emotional lines of life such as encounters, separations, and regrets.”

‘I don’t wanna do anything’ is an indie pop track with a lot of shoegazing influences through its dreamy guitars and synths. The progression of the song is solid and makes for a really nice listen. The bridge is what makes the track for me, as I was waiting for an explosion of sound.

‘Nowhere you are’ comes up next. This is a very laidback, languid listen. I would love to hear this live as it seems like the perfect song to sing the post chorus with a whole audience.

After that comes ‘as always’. We’re going for an acoustic guitar in the instrumentals with this one. The lyrics are already looking forward to the end of winter with its anticipation of a new spring day.

‘Wednesday Night’ starts off with a very ambient sound which I had hoped they’d continue throughout the song. They didn’t however they did add a very twangy guitar sound and even a flute which was awesome.

EASY’ is giving us some lovely soft rock. It’s retro, has a very cool synth in the instrumental and a wish to find happiness someday. Sungjin’s vocals are shining in this one.

After that we get ‘You Wake Me Up’. It’s emotional and beautiful. I really enjoyed how they played with intensity and build-ups. The piano is brilliant here and overall this track is stunning.

I don’t wanna lose’ is a rock ballad with intense piano and is explosive and raw. This is one to cry to during karaoke. This would even be a stunning OST for a K-drama. I would love to hear an acoustic version of this.

We’re closing this album with ‘Memories’. Sungjin looks back on a past relationship with expressive singing that really bring out the emotion with the listeners. It’s an impressive track.
