We had the chance to interview the band UINONE who released their incredible new album ‘HERMAN’ in February. The rock album contains 14 tracks and has a runtime a little over 47 minutes, so there was plenty to ask about.
Herman
What was the main inspiration for ‘Herman’?
‘Herman’ represents an ultimate emotion or state that we constantly search for. It could be an ideal world, or the peak of an emotion deep within us. We believe that the journey of yearning and searching itself is what *Herman* signifies.

Have you found your own ‘Herman’?
We are still searching for it. We believe we’ll be on this journey forever, and the fact that it never truly ends makes it even more meaningful.
본인만의 ‘Herman’을 찾았나요?
찾고 있다고 말하는 게 맞을 것 같아요. 아마도 영원히 찾는 과정에 있을 것 같아요. 그리고 그 과정이 끝나지 않는다는 게 더 의미 있다고 생각해요.
Can you tell us more about the song ‘Outcast’?
‘Outcast’ is about isolated beings. It could represent someone abandoned by the world or someone who chooses to detach themselves from society. We wanted to express the emotions they experience.
‘Outcast’라는 곡에 대해 조금 더 설명해 주실 수 있나요?
‘Outcast’는 소외된 존재에 대한 이야기예요. 세상이 던져놓은 존재일 수도 있고, 스스로 세상에서 벗어나고자 하는 존재일 수도 있어요. 그리고 그들이 겪는 감정을 표현하고 싶었어요.
In ‘Beck – outro,’ you express an alternate self while closing with an impressive instrumental outro. What does having an alternate self mean to you in life and love? Have you found yours?
We believe everyone has multiple selves. In life, love, and music, we reveal different versions of ourselves depending on the moment. We haven’t fully understood all of our selves yet, but through music, we feel like we are gradually getting closer.
‘Beck – outro’에서 여러분은 자신들의 또 다른 자아(alter)를 표현하며 멋진 연주 아웃트로로 마무리하셨습니다. 여러분에게 있어서 사랑과 삶에서의 또 다른 자아란 무엇인가요? 그것을 찾았나요?
우리는 모두 여러 개의 자아를 가지고 있다고 생각해요. 삶을 살면서, 사랑을 하면서, 음악을 하면서 각각의 순간에서 다른 모습을 드러내기도 하고요. 아직 그 모든 자아를 완전히 이해한 건 아니지만, 음악을 통해 조금씩 더 가까워지고 있는 것 같습니다.
Throughout the album, there are many lyrics referencing faith and God. What is your perspective on this? Did working on this album change any of your thoughts about faith?
The ‘God’ we refer to in our lyrics is not necessarily tied to a specific religious belief but rather represents an ultimate existence or force that humans seek. Each person has their own interpretation of what that is, and we wanted to portray the journey of searching for it. While working on the album, we did reflect more on what we believe in and what we rely on. However, we feel that we are still in the process of searching for that answer.
앨범 전체에 걸쳐 신앙과 신(God)에 대한 가사가 많이 등장하는데, 이에 대한 여러분의 견해는 무엇인가요? 이 앨범을 작업하면서 신앙에 대한 생각이 변한 부분이 있나요?
우리가 말하는 ‘신’은 특정한 종교적 개념이라기보다는, 인간이 궁극적으로 찾으려 하는 어떤 존재 혹은 힘을 의미하는 것에 가까워요. 사람마다 각자의 신이 있을 것이고, 우리는 그것을 찾아가는 여정을 표현하고 싶었어요. 작업하면서 우리가 믿는 것, 의지하는 것에 대해 더 많이 생각하게 된 건 사실이에요. 하지만 여전히 그 답을 찾고 있는 과정에 있다고 생각합니다.
The band
UINONE has four members: there’s KIMUZI, Kim Jae-Il, Seo Tae-yang and Jo Jae-min. They’re solo artists as well as band members.
Can you tell us a little about how the group was formed?
UINONE is a band that naturally came together. Each of us had been making music individually, but over time, we realized the need for a band format. We gathered as people who could complement each other musically, and that’s how UINONE came to be.
그룹의 결성 과정에 대해 조금 이야기해 주실 수 있나요?
UINONE은 우리가 자연스럽게 모이면서 시작된 밴드입니다. 원래 각자 음악을 해오던 사람들이었고, 개인적으로 작업을 하면서도 밴드라는 형태가 필요하다는 걸 점점 깨닫게 되었어요. 음악적으로 서로의 빈자리를 채워줄 수 있는 사람들이 모였고, 그렇게 지금의 UINONE이 되었습니다.
Where did the group name come from, and what does it mean?
UINONE is derived from the word “猿人” (ape-man). We wanted to express the most primal emotions through music while also holding on to the purity we had when we first started making music.
그룹 이름은 어디에서 왔으며, 어떤 의미를 가지고 있나요?
UINONE(유인원)은 ‘유인원(猿人, 원시인)’에서 따온 이름입니다. 음악적으로 가장 본능적인 감정을 표현하고 싶었고, 동시에 우리가 처음 음악을 시작했을 때의 순수한 마음을 잃지 않겠다는 의미도 담고 있습니다.
Was the transition from solo activities to band activities challenging, or did you find synergy easily?
It was both. When working solo, we were used to making all the decisions ourselves, whereas being in a band required adapting to a collaborative process. However, through this process, we experienced a synergy that we couldn’t have achieved alone. Ideas that wouldn’t have come up individually flowed naturally within the band.
솔로 활동에서 밴드 활동으로의 변화는 어렵거나 큰 변화였나요? 아니면 시너지를 쉽게 찾을 수 있었나요?
둘 다 있었습니다. 솔로 활동을 하면서 모든 걸 혼자 결정하는 게 익숙했는데, 밴드는 다 같이 만들어가는 작업이라 적응이 필요했어요. 하지만 함께하는 과정에서 솔로 때는 할 수 없었던 시너지를 많이 경험했습니다. 혼자였다면 나오지 않았을 아이디어들이 밴드 안에서는 자연스럽게 흐르게 되니까요.
UINONE is about two months away from its first anniversary. How has the first year been?
It went by incredibly fast. At first, we weren’t even sure what kind of band we would become, but through making the album and performing on stage, we gradually discovered our identity. We’re still learning, but we’ve experienced so much in our first year, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.

굉장히 빠르게 지나갔어요. 처음엔 우리가 어떤 밴드가 될지 스스로도 확신이 없었는데, 앨범을 만들고, 무대에 서면서 점점 우리의 색이 무엇인지 찾아가고 있는 것 같습니다. 여전히 배워가는 과정이지만, 첫 해 동안 정말 많은 걸 경험했고 앞으로가 더 기대됩니다.
