We’re back with another k-pop time capsule! Today featuring Beast‘s (B2ST) breakout hit ‘SHOCK‘. Everyday I shock, every night I shock, SHOCK. Try to listen to it without getting it stuck in your head for days, I dare you. This dance bop is catchy as hell, and has been living in my head rent free for over 10 years.
BEAST/ B2ST
Or should I say ‘Highlight‘? How many names does a group need anyway? They debuted in 2009 with six original members as B2ST, only to rebrand to ‘BEAST‘ soon after. The original lineup consisted of Yoon Doojoon (leader is bias <3), Yang Yoseob, Lee Gikwang, Son Dongwoon, Jang Hyunseung and Yong Junhyung. The last two left the group in 2017 and 2019 respectively. The fans were called ‘Beauties’ and boy do I miss cheesy 2000’s fandom names.
The band re-debuted in 2017 under a new agency, now known as ‘Highlight’. We have to say though, all things considered, and K-pop’s fluidity, they’ve done great. Going strong for over 10 years without massive changes to the lineup, and no indefinite hiatus. They did take a break for their military service, but they’re already back. Definitely impressive.
Because most of the members had previously competed to join other groups, when they debuted, they were called a ‘recycled group’. Despite this kind of negative energy, BEAST has consistently maintained commercial success, and is actually among the most awarded groups in K-pop. Respect.
SHOCK
‘Shock‘ was the title track of their second EP, ‘Shock of the new Era’, released in March 2010. Their first number one hit, it propelled them solidly in the mainstream. A dance hit, like most of their tracks, ‘Shock‘ is an earworm with few peers. From the same EP, you should absolutely give ‘Take Care of My Girlfriend (Say No)’ a listen – more ballad bop than dance, it’s another great track.
From the absurdly shaped/ ripped tops, the heavy chain accessorizing, to the logically and grammatically questionable lyrics and the fluorescent lighting, this video is truly, unmistakably, pure 2010 k-pop mood. Feast your eyes and ears and thank me later. This is a piece of k-pop history right here.
Everyday I shock, SHOCK, every night I shock, SHOCK!
