[Review] Yerin Baek – tellusaboutyourself

Yerin Baek, one of our favorite R&B singers is back with the full album ‘tellusaboutyourself’. It’s not as long as her previous album ‘Every letter I sent you’ which was 18 songs long. This one is 14 songs. Let’s dive right in, because this is probably going to be a hella long review.

tellusaboutyourself

We open with the track ‘Lovegame’. I am in love with the synths she has in the instrumentation. Baek’s comforting vocals are as smooth as always. Despite being over three minutes, it feels quite short.

Track number two is ‘You’re so lonely now, so you need me back by your side again’. The deep, deep bass I could feel deep in my chest. Damn. That electric guitar solo killed me and resurrected me.

‘I am not your ocean anymore’ follows that with some nice retro vibes. Also, hello saxophone solo!! This feels quite eighties overall, but it still feels fresh. The high note around 2:30 had me shook.

After that we get ‘Hall&Oates’. This one feels so spacious because of the instrumentation while still remaining very intimate at the same time. The keyboards are super lovely. This one is rather short, clocking in just over two and a half minutes.

‘Ms. Delicate’ follows that which has a bit more groove to it. The echo placed on her vocals are so, so cool. The last two minutes almost feel like an entirely new song. It’s brilliant.

Track number six is an ‘Interlude’ of just under two minutes. We get some groovy seventies psychedelic instrumentals.

‘Loner’ has a fun instrumentation which is quite a dichotomy with the lyrics. There are cute little samples used while the lyrics mostly seem quite sad. I really enjoyed her almost slam poetry verse in the bridge.

Next up is ‘“HOMESWEETHOME”’ feels quite pop-ish as soon as the intro is over. I like the canon with the vocal line and I wish she had used it more throughout the song.

‘Loveless’ follows with a more jazzy tune. I am in LOVE with this track. The jazz, the blues, the insane belting with the saxophone. UGH, this is so good!

We’re on track number ten with ‘Hate you’. This is the first of two title tracks. The droning drum and snare beat kinda fits the theme. The ‘I decided not to give a fuck, because everything you say is full of shit’ is immaculate.

The second title track is ‘0415’. Honestly, the entire track is hella mesmerizing.

Please experience this entire video with me, because I am so confused but intrigued at the same time.

‘I’ll be your family!’ comes next. This one is absolutely lovely and feels so warm in meaning. I love it. Though I had to stop my brain from replaying this clip from ‘Game Of Thrones’ where Arya tells Gendry that she could be his family.

Track 13 is ‘I’m in love’. For some reason I’m reminded of an American prom night with Yerin Baek on stage and some shy love birds slow dancing on the dance floor. This track is so sweet.

We close off the album with ‘Bubbles&Mushrooms’. This feels a lot like House which is an interesting combo with Baek’s vocals. The crescendo of echoes in the bridge is insane especially when the jemba (I think it’s a jemba, not quite sure about that though) comes in.
