[Review] Through The Darkness

We’re back with a new K-drama Review and this time we’re writing about ‘Through The Darkness’. This SBS drama aired from January till March and was based on the non-fiction book by profiler Kwon Il-Yong and writer Go Na-Moo. The drama is currently available on Netflix.

The script of ‘Through The Darkness’ was adapted by Seol Yi-Na and directed by Park Bo-Ram. The series has 12 episodes.

Plot

‘Through The Darkness’ follows the story of a group of criminal profilers. It follows along as they form the team, how they struggle to find common ground between the various teams and how they deal with interviews with serial killers.

The first member of the group is Kook Young-Soo, played by Jin Sun-Kyu who you’ll know from ‘Space Sweepers’ and ‘Extreme Job’. Kook Young-Soo used to have a high ranked position within the Seoul police force but took a demotion because he wanted to start the criminal profiler team.

His first recruit is Song Ha-Young, played by Kim Nam-Gil. This man is always so incredible in his roles, this was no different. He is introverted and relentless in his cases. He started as a regular detective but after being recruited he studied up a lot about murderers and their psychology.

Song is our lead character and we see how he empathizes with the victim’s family, how he connects the dots during investigations and how at times he has a difficult time separating work from his private life.

We see how they have to work together with Wide Area Squad 2 quite often. Detective Yoon Tae-Goo, portrayed by Kim So-Jin, had an interesting story but I wish we’d have gotten to know her a bit more. She was pretty awesome. Her partner Nam Il-Young was played by Jung Soon-Won.

Overall

The cases portrayed in the series were very interesting and it was intriguing to see how they portrayed the serial killers. I’d very much enjoy a second season of this as I feel like we could get to know certain characters a bit more.

The only minor point I could think of was that the very beginning was so dark and I mean that in the literal sense. I had to turn up the brightness of my TV because I could hardly see anything, I was getting ‘Game of Thrones’ flashbacks.
