[Review] SuperM – Super One

The Avengers of Kpop, SuperM is back after nearly a year of having debuted with their first mini-album.

The members Taemin, Kai, Baekhyun, Ten, Taeyong, Mark and Lucas, for sure have had one busy year with SuperM promotions as well as their group and solo activities, but we are thrilled to see them back together.

Let’s dive into this super release!

Super One

The album kicks off with the title track ‘One (Monster & Infinity)’. This song feels like a mashup of the following two. It has a lot of house music elements which I loved, and Ten’s vocals definitely stood out along with Taemin’s. Check the very high budget, futuristic and very cool music video below.

Infinity’ is next starting off with amazing rapping by Mark and Taeyong. The harmonization of the members was very cool and Lucas’ deep vocals definitely added a special touch I loved. There is a certain futuristic vibe in this track that makes it sci-fi movie OST quality, and I’m here for that.

Continuing with a similar vibe we get ‘Monster’, and the vocal line owned this track. I totally loved how Baekhyun and Taemin’s very distinctive vocals blend with Ten’s. It was a fantastic mix and seriously I would love to listen to this track live.

With a more playful, pop style ‘Wish You Were Here’ plays. Kai’s vocals give this track a different colour along with Lucas rapping, there is a certain chillness in it that makes this song kinda groovy, and I completely dig it.

Big Chance’ comes up next with a summery vibe, and lyrics that are youthful, carefree and kinda cute. Overall, this song felt like a fresh breeze on a warm day, super refreshing to listen to.

100’ was pre-released back in August and what a hype track. Mark has writing credits in this song and from start to end this track is an injection of pure adrenaline. It goes hard and we love SuperM for its ‘all in’ style. Watch the music video below and be ready for experimental looks, visuals, and a lot of visual effects.

With more EDM, a fantastic bass and killer rhythm we get the pre-released track ‘Tiger Inside’, this song had me shook when it was released. The rapping was on point, and the bridge with Taemin and Baekhyun was mind blowing. So much talent!

Emotional whiplash comes with ‘Better Days’, with emotive lyrics and will have more than one tearing up. I felt that this track was created to give comfort, and it absolutely does with its soothing flow and vocals that can truly touch hearts.

On a lighter note we get ‘Together At Home’ with a more early 2000s vibe. Taeyong and Mark took part in the writing of the lyrics. The intro with Taemin and Baekhyun singing and Kai’s rapping set the full mood of this track. I really liked the funky flow and how well the vocals were mixed, a total bop.

Drip’ is next with a more R&B/Hip Hop influenced style. I feel like this b-side could have also been the title track for this album. There is a uniqueness that I absolutely loved. An absolute gem in this album.

Lucas opens up ‘Line ‘Em Up’ with his deep voice, followed by a layering in the track that is crazy but awesome. The full flow of this song goes everywhere and has several beat drops but it worked out really well. It is experimental and very unique.

The harmonization at the beginning of ‘Dangerous Woman’ sounds like an angel choir, and it just gets better with its R&B and super groovy vibe. In case you haven’t watched the live performance, check it below.

Blessing us with his high notes we have Baekhyun starting off ‘Step Up’. This song has a lot of synth but it was so well integrated, mixed and layered that it isn’t overbearing but rather unique and super dope.

So Long’ plays with an experimental sound and some incredibly performed vocalization. This track shows one hundred percent the talent of the vocal line in SuperM, they truly are the Avengers of K-pop

We reach the end of this fantastic album with ‘With You’, this song is a comfort song, there isn’t a single thing I don’t love about this track. When it was released during the Global Citizen concert it felt like a warm hug, and so far it still has the same effect. Absolutely adorable and 100% wholesome.

Final thoughts

Overall, this album felt completely different from their first mini-album. It was more experimental, and I particularly liked how the members had the chance to show their vocal colours and talent. I cannot wait until their next release.
