[Review] SUNMI – 1/6

Our girl SUNMI is back with her new EP ‘1/6’ and I’ve been waiting (im)patiently for this release. SUNMI is flexing her songwriting muscles, she’s the solo writer for all all the lyrics on the EP. Let’s dive right in!

1/6

We start off strong with the title track ‘You can’t sit with us’. The phrase is a reference to the amazing iconic film ‘Mean Girls’, which if you haven’t seen it yet, please go watch it! The concept of the music video is Y2K and they did such a good job with it. The song itself expresses anger towards a loved one. It’s catchy as hell and I can’t wait to dance to it.

‘SUNNY’ follows that by taking us to the beach with its retro pop concept. It’s very cute and reminds me a bit of her previous comeback. It’s absolutely lovely!

Next up is ‘1/6’. SUNMI came out with her Borderline Personality Disorder diagnosis and this song seems like a clear reference to that. You can read the translated lyrics here. It’s a very soft song, with nice synths to create an atmospheric effect as she’s talking about wanting to go to the moon. It fits it very well.

‘Call’ is next and stays with the retro pop vibe. The lyrics talk about feeling disappointed by your partner because they were supposed to be different. During the bridge there’s some really fun instrumentals and I need a dance remix of this to go chill in the club.

Track five is ‘Narcissism’. Based on the Greek myth about Narcissus, the song talks about losing yourself and not knowing who’s your reflection in the mirror. We’re staying with the synths for this track, but there’s more EDM thrown in. This is one of my favorite tracks on the EP. It’s a major vibe and fits her vocals so well.

The last track of the EP is ‘Borderline’ which was released last year with a special video. They tweaked the instrumentation a little bit.

Overall ‘1/6’ by SUNMI is a fantastic mini-album. It’s well balanced and has both absolute bangers and a deeply personal meaning to it. It’s a great combo, so I’m sure it’ll do well in the charts. You can find the mini-album on Spotify here.
