[Review] SUNMI – HEART MAID

Our girl SUNMI is finally back with her new album ‘HEART MAID’. We’re super stoked as we’d been wondering about her next comeback.

Sunmi participated in writing, composing, and producing all the songs. Let’s dive in!

HEART MAID

We start off with the track ‘MAID’. This intro track takes us on an electronic journey. It’s a creepy opener, that really sets the bar high.

After that comes the title track ‘CYNICAL’. It’s a fun, witty track with an electronic synths in the instrumental.

I was a little surprised they released this a week after Halloween, but it’s a bop.

‘Sweet nightmare’ is an electronic pop track with 80s synths and great vocals. The hook is super catchy and I enjoyed the full progression of the song.

We’re going synth-pop dance with ‘Ddu Ddu’. I’m kind of obsessed with the beat and vibe of this song. It’s such an effortlessly cool track. It’s an easy sing-along track which will have you shimmying in no time.

‘Mini skirt’ is a cute track. The synthesizer is really working hard and the organ is a fun addition. Honestly it’s a bop.

‘Tuberose’ brings in some sexy electric guitars. I really enjoyed the band vibe here though the electric guitar really spices things up.

After that comes ‘Bass(ad)’. This is an instrumental interlude of 40 seconds where the bass goes groovy.

‘BLUE!’ goes for a pop rock moment that gave me a few flashbacks her time in Wonder Girls. This was pre-released 2 months ago.

Next up is ‘Balloon in Love’. It’s a cool indie pop moment with fun instrumentals and nice vocals. It makes for a smooth listen.

‘Happy af’ sounds surprisingly happy for a rather sad song. ‘Walking at 2am’ shows more its true colours as a sad track. Both are about feelings after a break-up though ‘happy af’ is still trying to pretend they’re fine.

‘Bath’ is a call to calm down and have a bath. There’s literally nothing better to relax, I fully agree on that. It’s a soft cozy pop track that you can even put on while taking a bath, to go full circle.

We close the album with ‘ A long long night’. We’re talking about some mixed feelings here after the break-up. It’s a nice R&B ballad though.
