[Review] Red Velvet – Queendom

Red Velvet is finally back with their sixth mini-album ‘Queendom’. Let’s dive right in, because I’m expecting beautiful vocals and at least one summer bop!

Queendom

We start off with the title track ‘Queendom’. We’re getting positive vibes in this title track. We’re all ‘Queens and Kings’ in this dance track. It’s very cute with very airy synths thrown in. The chorus is hella catchy and the music video looks stunning!

Next up is ‘Pose’ which is an interesting blend of their Red and Velvet side. The synths and beats make it more intense. The chorus makes it a bit more playful. It’s a really fun listen. I kind of hope that there’s some vogueing in the dance choreo for this one.

‘Knock On Wood’ is an electro punk track. It feels very retro and is interestingly layered. The rap sections are dope and the vocals really complement the electronic beats. I enjoyed how they used some of the vocals as part of the beats as well. Though I do kind of wish they had gone a bit harder so it packed more of a punch.

Next up

We follow that up with ‘Better Be’. This one is groovy! The track leans more to the R&B side, it reminds me of ‘Automatic’ a little bit. It’s super catchy and I like the samples they used. I loved the harmonies and vocal line in the bridge. I did wish they had switched up the instrumentals a bit in the bridge, to add some more variation.

‘Pushin’ N Pullin’’ gives us some more R&B and it is so SMOOTH. I am absolutely in love with this track. I hope they give us a live performance of this soon. The piano chords are awesome and I enjoyed how they implemented it. This track is elegant Red Velvet and I dig it.

We close off with ‘Hello, Sunset’. We’re going electronic R&B in this one. The track feels very languid and relaxed. It’s a smooth listen and a major vibe.

Overall, ‘Queendom’ by Red Velvet is an enjoyable listen. I did miss their experimental side a bit, but we got a lot of smooth R&B vibes. You can listen to the mini on Spotify here.
