[Review] PENTAGON – LOVE or TAKE

The boys from PENTAGON are back with their new mini-album ‘LOVE or TAKE’. Let’s dive right in!

LOVE or TAKE

We open with the single ‘10s and’. It feels like a perfect opening really. It’s like a countdown before the main show. The track feels upbeat, a breath of fresh air and a great mood setter.

Next up is the title track ‘DO or NOT’. That jazzy opening gave me chills. I love the little whistle as a repetitive theme. The message of the song is ‘you either love me or you don’t.’ I am digging the rock influences in this track.

‘1+1’ follows that with an R&B vibe and some interesting samples. This is such a smooth listen. The hook is catchy as HELL. I’m going to have this stuck in my head for the rest of the day. It reminds me a little of Western boy bands in the 90s/2000s.

We follow that up with ‘Baby I Love You’. This reminds me of all the cute PENTAGON concepts but with a touch of R&B again. Their vocals are fabulous in this and they work that balance between cute and genuine so well.

Next up

‘That’s Me’ starts with some old-timey 60s vocals before we get a music style whiplash. Apparently inspired by the film ‘The Great Gatsby’ it gives us electronica goodness. I could totally see this as an OST of the film. If someone were to make a film edit on YouTube, please tag us in it. God damn, Hui’s high notes.

We’re getting an overload of cuteness with ‘Sing-a-song’. Honestly, this song is a vibe. It displays all of their charms and warms my heart.

The last track on ‘LOVE or TAKE’ is ‘Boy in time’ which is a Hui solo song. Hui had to enlist last month, so this is kind of a temporary farewell gift. This track is a beautiful ballad where Hui reminisces about his time as an innocent boy. He does it with a lot of incredible vocal runs. It choked me up a little.
