[Review] MAMAMOO – WAW

MAMAMOO decided to bless us with new music today with the mini-album ‘WAW’. This mini is the first part of the ‘WAW’ (Where Are We) project with concerts and documentaries to come.

Let’s dive right in because I’ve been waiting for this one.

WAW

We start off with the title track ‘Where Are We Now’. This is finaly giving us that classic MAMAMOO ballad sound I’ve been missing. The track has a beautiful instrumentation with piano, strings and bass sprinkled throughout. The harmonies gave me chills and I’m living for the Hwa Sa and Whee In moments.

The music video is absolutely stunning and was directed by HOBIN film. The members all look amazing and I can’t wait to hear this live one day.

‘Another Day’ follows that with a heartfelt break up song. I love the fact that Moonbyul was singing as well as her low pitch creates this wonderful layering. The lyrics had me choked up a little.

I won’t say anything but that doesn’t mean I’m doing well
Because these words will make us sick even more
Thank you for being with me for the first time and the last time
I will erase your name and warmth

Next up is the track ‘A Memory For Life’. This feels a little jazzier than the previous ballads. That electric guitar is to die for, I love it so much. The bridge carries so much power. That together with Solar’s belting, is just everything I needed today.

The last track on the mini is ‘Destiny Part.2’. The first part of ‘Destiny’ was released during their stint in the Mnet show ‘Queendom’. Where the first ‘Destiny’ was powerful and explosive, this is still powerful but it’s the ballad version. The violins in the new version are super lovely. Their harmonies in the bridge and outro are such a beautiful way to close this album.

‘WAW’ by MAMAMOO shows their ballad charm that we all missed. You can find the mini on Spotify here.
