[Review] Lucid Dream

We’re back with a new film review, this time we’re writing about ‘Lucid Dream’.The 2017 film is available to watch on Netflix.

‘Lucid Dream’ was written and directed by Kim Joon-sung. This was his directorial debut. He was inspired by the film ‘Inception’ and I feel like you can really tell. The dreamscape scenes especially feel very reminiscent of the Christopher Nolan film.

Plot

We follow Choi Dae-Ho, portrayed by Ko Soo as he tries to find his missing son. The case is a couple of years old, but he doesn’t want to give up despite the fact that there are hardly any leads.

Desperate in his search, he goes to So-Hyun, played by Kang Hye-Jung who we know from ‘Jugglers’. So-Hyun is a specialist in lucid dreaming and he asks for her help.

During his lucid dreams he can revisit his memory at the fair where his son was abducted. It turns out the truth is more complicated than he expected.

There’s a lot of action and chasing in the film. We turn from suspect to suspect, not knowing who to trust.

Overall

First of all, I’m afraid this film doesn’t pass the Bechdel test. There are only a couple of women with lines in ‘Lucid Dream’ and they don’t interact.

Second of all, I think the pacing could have been a bit better. I feel like the first 20 minutes were filled with so much exposition, it got quite hectic.

I think some of the characters could have gotten a bit more background, like So-Hyun. Apart from her being a doctor, I don’t know anything about who she is.

What I did enjoy were the fight sequences and the CGI moments. In the penultimate fight scenes, I thought the fight was well choreographed and fun to watch.
