[Review] IU – Pieces

The one and only IU is back, this time she decided to surprise fans with a collection of unreleased singles she wrote throughout her twenties. Consisting of five new songs, this EP gives a glimpse of IU’s thoughts and moods during different times, settings and moments in her life.

Let’s get into it and check the music in this release.

Pieces

Starting off we get the lovely single ‘Drama‘. This song is adorable, it has a youthful energy mixed into it that just made me very happy while listening. The percussion and guitar in this single had me smiling through the full track.

In the album description IU explained that this song was made for a friend who had suffered from a heartbreak, and I cannot imagine any other better way to lift ones’ mood than this song.

The next track ‘Next Stop‘ follows up with a more serious mood and minimalist sound, all the efforts in this track are directed to enjoy IU’s vocals and the incredible instrumentation included in this song. Just sit and enjoy the music created for this song, it is a listening experience. Enjoy to the live clip below.

Winter Sleep‘ is the title track for this EP, and it feels very much like a winter ballad packed with emotions and beautiful harmonies. This song is described by IU as the track that took her the longest to write. She started writing it when she was 27 and finished it at 29. This song definitely feels more personal with a rather serious but heartwarming tone I really enjoyed.

Written while she was 24, ‘You‘ was created as if it was a letter for someone far away. In its description IU explains that she wasn’t sure about publishing this single, however, we are happy she decided to release this wonderful song. Its minimalistic melody really put all the spotlight into her vocals and it is absolutely beautiful to listen to.

Closing this EP, we get the single ‘Love Letter‘. This is the first single IU gave to an artist since she started composing. For this version she decided to go with a more fairy-tale like style with dreamy vocals and wonderful instrumentation. If you haven’t seen her performance of this song in ‘Yu Huiyeols Sketchbook’, check it below.
