[Review] ITZY – CHECKMATE

It has been ten months since their last release, and the girls from ITZY are finally back with a brand new mini-album. They have been taking the K-pop world by storm with their catchy songs and fantastic concepts, and we are curious to see what surprises they are bringing with this release.

Let’s dive into what Lia, Ryunjin, Yeji, Chaeryeong and Yuna have prepared for MIDZY.

CHECKMATE

With very playful beats and a youthful energy we get the title track ‘SNEAKERS‘. This single is all about believing in yourself and following your heart, I absolutely loved the power, energy and catchiness. It is a fun and very easy listen. For the music video, we get ITZY’s usual killer stage presence and the very stunning aesthetics.

I really hope they get a sneaker’s brand endorsement after this music video, the concept and style suit them extremely well. Watch the music video below.

Marching band drums and a rather edgy track takes over in ‘RACER‘. With this single ITZY brings a hybrid of trap and very interesting vocal arrangement. The beat drops in this track go hard and had me absolutely shocked. This is the first time i have heard them going so experimental with their music but I totally dig it.

WHAT I WANT‘ brings a touch of electro-pop and a total vibe to this release, this single has a touch of brit-pop and a repetitive hook that will have you jamming at it. Next up is ‘Free Fall‘ with an intense bass line and arrangement, the “wheeeeeeee” makes this song one of a kind, I did not see it coming with the rather dark feel of the single, but ITZY made work and created a total unexpected bop.

Intense EDM beats come along in ‘365‘ this single brings a more alternative hip-hop style with awesome beat drops and fantastic effect. The rapping for this single and changes of pace are super dope. A total banger.

DOMINO‘ comes along bringing back a more familiar sound and outstanding vocals. This pop single is all about powerful singing and a smooth guitar instrumentation. The harmonisation and tempo of this song is like honey to the ears, a top tier b-side.

Last on this mini-album is the English version of ‘SNEAKERS’, ending this release on the hype note it started. If you are up for diverse sounds and cool rapping and singing, check this mini-album here.
