In this edition of our drama review, we’re diving into a recent series that has captivated us with its brilliant performances and deeply moving storyline. Let’s talk about the ENA series, ‘Dear Hyeri’!
Written by Han Ga-ram and directed by Jung Ji-hyun and Heo Seok-won, ‘Dear Hyeri’ tells the story of a woman battling dissociative personality disorder while trying to find peace and purpose in her career and personal life.
A Complex Protagonist
Joo Eun-ho (Shin Hye-sun) has worked as an announcer for the past 14 years, but despite her dedication, she remains relatively unknown compared to her more successful peers. Her life has been marred by tragedy, beginning with the loss of her parents at a young age, followed by the deaths of her younger sister and grandmother in adulthood.
Just as she begins to see hope, life deals her another painful blow, leaving Eun-ho isolated once again. This emotional turmoil triggers a split in her psyche, and she develops a second personality, Joo Hyeri—a cheerful, uncomplicated woman who works as a parking attendant.
However, Eun-ho and Hyeri are completely unaware of each other’s existence, each leading separate lives within the same body.
The Discovery of Duality
While attending therapy, Hyeri learns about Eun-ho’s existence but chooses to continue living her life independently, embracing her freedom and even finding love with Kang Joo-yeon (Kang Hoon). This new relationship becomes complicated when Kang Hoon later crosses paths with Eun-ho, blurring the lines between their lives.
Meanwhile, Eun-ho falls ill and reconnects with her ex-boyfriend, Jung Hyun-o (Lee Jin-wook), who steps in to care for her. Through his support and her sessions with her therapist, Eun-ho eventually learns about Hyeri and the complexity of their shared existence.
Confronted with the truth, Eun-ho embarks on a journey to understand why Hyeri can find joy while she struggles. As her emotional wounds resurface, Eun-ho is pushed to the brink, contemplating letting go of her own identity to live solely as Hyeri.
A Journey of Healing
‘Dear Hyeri’ is a poignant exploration of the human mind, delving into how past traumas shape our present and our struggle to find healing and happiness. Each character in this series grapples with personal pain, but their journeys are filled with moments of growth, resilience, and love.
