[Review] Baek A Yeon – Observe

Baek A Yeon is finally back with the new EP ‘Observe’. The EP comes after being delayed for two months due to COVID. We’re really happy that it’s out, so let’s dive right in!

Observe

We start off with the title track ‘0%’. This song is for anyone who’s feeling close to a burn-out. Listen to this song and rest! You can check out the translated lyrics here. It’s a wonderful song with an interesting string arrangement and Baek A Yeon’s jazzy vocals.

‘The War on Loneliness’ comes next with an R&B vibe. The instrumentation is so wonderfully layered, it begs for multiple repeats just so you can listen to all those great samples thrown in. The song tells the story of fighting the loneliness after a break-up. It’s hard to learn how to be content by yourself.

After that we get ‘Wanna be crooked’ which was written, composed and arranged by Kim Won who also wrote the lyrics for ‘So So‘. ‘Wanna be crooked’ is about wanting to shed your ‘good girl’ image to be who you are. It’s a lovely track with a really catchy hook. It’s feels very playful. I am obsessed with Baek A Yeon’s vocals in this one.

Next up is ‘Imagination’ which was co-written by Baek A Yeon. The bass makes this track super groovy. I like the way they play with the rhythm. The strings are a wonderful addition. This is a really smooth track to listen to. I love it.

The following track is ‘Daydream’ which starts with a beautiful opening. I feel like I’ve stepped into an old black-and-white movie. This is such a stunning ballad. I desperately need a live version with a full orchestra. God, this is amazing!

Overall, ‘Observe’ by Baek A Yeon was definitely worth the wait. It’s a beautiful, cohesive EP that is definitely worth a listen.
