MV Recommendation: Park Won – Rudderless

Get ready for some sad, sad music.

This week I’m writing about Park Won’s music video for ‘Rudderless’.

Let’s start by taking a quick look at some of the lyrics because that’ll make the video easier to explain.

In ‘Rudderless’ Park Won speaks about being stuck in a sad day he made himself and he can’t get out of. He also knows that he won’t change and won’t do anything to make his life better or happier. There’s even a phrase where he says that he’s happy to see someone else suffer so he knows that he isn’t alone in his pain.

In the music video you see someone with a mask, he’s alienated from his entire group. The others even walk away from him when he goes to sit down somewhere.

Then a new girl arrives. She tries to reach out a couple of times but it’s no use. The lead already is so accustomed in his solitude, that even though he may not have created it himself, he’s certainly maintaining it by refusing her friendly advances.

The fact that she tried to become friends with him, meant alienating her other co-workers who start seeing her as strange because she even tried.

The lead who starts seeing her retreat in her shell, doesn’t do anything. There’s a helplessness to his breakdown. It took my breath away when I first saw it.

Take a look at the video to see the rest of the story. The amount of storytelling that happens in just under five minutes is brilliant.
