LGBTQ+ Representation In K-pop

It’s June tomorrow, which means Happy Pride Month! As a special gift, we created a list of some of our favorite K-pop music videos that have some LGBTQ+ representation. We know that South Korea might not be the most forward thinking country in regards to the gay community. However, that doesn’t stop Korean artists from sharing their opinion and support.

Here we go!

K.Will – Please don’t

I know, I know, this is probably in every single list. But I’d be remiss in not sharing it. The fact that people were so shocked by the plot reveal shows that we still have a long way to go to adjust our heteronormative brains.

Wheein – Soar

They pretty much used the same technique for the MV for ‘Soar’. That doesn’t make it less impactful though.

Holland – I’m not Afraid

It’s not all doom and gloom. This video by Holland is a celebration of being proud. The inclusiveness of the video makes me super happy.

Tenny – 159cm

This video is wild from start to finish, but it’s absolutely incredible. Also the two girls are super cute.

Kevin Oh – Lover

First of all, this song is absolutely beautiful and the soundwaves linger far after the song is finished. Kevin’s voice has that effect.

MRSHLL – Pose

A self-love BOP by the first openly gay Korean R&B artist. We STAN, y’all.

Planet Shiver – Rainbow featuring Crush

Wholesome, there’s literally no other word for it. Everything about this music video and song is perfection. If you need a pick-me-up, this is the song for you.

Brown Eyed Girls – Wonder Woman

The drag queens in this music video give me LIFE. They all look so amazing and I wish they’d do a whole bunch of makeup tutorials.

Orange Caramel – Catallena

For this song it’s not so much the music video, but rather the lyrics that make it rainbow coloured. With lyrics like: ‘Oh my, she’s so great, I’ve fallen for her; Even as a girl, I can see she’s so great; She’s temperamental but I want to see her; I want to know her, I want to dance with her’

Jo Kwon – Animal featuring J-Hope

The focus for me lies on the fact that 2PM’s Jo Kwon is wearing heels, gender norms who? It’s a BOP and I’m getting major Lady Gaga vibes so I figured this was a nice way to close off this list. Get your party shoes on and go crazy in your bedroom!

This was it for this list of LGBTQ+ Representation in K-pop. I hope you found some new songs to vibe to.

If you like reading Webtoons, why not head on over to our Webtoon section, we also made a Pride Edition with some wholesome representation.

We see you, we hear you, you’re valid. Happy Pride Month everyone!
