K-Music Time Capsule: ORANGE CARAMEL – Catallena

For this week’s K-Music Time Capsule I want to feature the group ORANGE CARAMEL with their iconic song ‘Catallena’.

ORANGE CARAMEL was a girl group that was under Pledis Entertainment. They were a sub unit Raina, Nana and Lizzy who were members of After School and were active from 2010-2016.

The Meme Queens

If you spend a lot of time on the explore page of Instagram and you enjoy K-pop memes and the likes, you must have seen the famous opening pass by. During the live performances, the three members Raina, Nana and Lizzy start the song off by shouting ‘hah’. The more they did the song, the crazier the ‘hahs’ became.

There’s even a compilation of all the opening ‘hahs’ and it’s amazingly bonkers. I’d recommend using headphones, because without context your family might think you’re watching something entirely else.

If you want, you can find the translated lyrics here.

But here’s a little highlight.

Oh my, she’s so great, I’ve fallen for her
Even as a girl, I can see she’s so great.
She’s temperamental but I want to see her,
I want to know her, I want to dance with her.

Translation by Popgasa.

The interesting thing is when they sing ‘Jutti Meri Oye Hoi Hoi Paula Mera Oye Hoi Hoi’, which is apparently Punjabi for ‘My shoe, my sandal’.

Does it have any meaning with the actual lyrics? To be honest, I’ve no idea. Or at least, I don’t see it.

It also begs the question, what is the relationship between the lyrics and the music video. Again, I have zero answers. But I do know that the MV is iconic in its own way. Be sure to check it out!

If you want to add the ‘Catallena’ by ORANGE CARAMEL to your K-pop playlist, here’s the Spotify link.
