EP Review: MFBTY – Dream Catcher

MFBTY with the fabulous Tiger JK, Yoon Mi-rae and Bizzy is back with a brand new EP. I wasn’t ready, but they delivered!

If you want to know more about Yoon Mi-rae, go check out our DisKovery With A K episode.

The EP: ‘Dream Catcher’ has six songs, so let’s dive into it!

‘Dream Catcher’ starts with the trippy ‘Intru’ that is a beautiful amalgamation of different sounds and beats. All of the seemingly random samples blend in with the beautiful saxophone. There’s even a horse neighing at one point. I don’t know how it works, but I totally dig it!

The second track feels like a rude awakening after the soft, hypnotizing ‘Intru’. ‘Dream Catcher’ brings it back to old school rap. Pay attention to the grungy guitar. This is such a hype song. I’m in love.

The song you’re hearing in the start of the video is ‘Binu’ by Bibi. Definitely go check out her music, she’s amazing. Bibi is signed under Feel Ghood Music which is the record label Tiger JK founded in 2013.

‘Badu Curse’ is the sexy song we all need in our lives. It displays the members’ powerful rap, while also putting Yoon Mi-rae’s gorgeous vocals in the spotlight. I never thought the phrase ‘Have you ever made love on a boat’ would be so catchy. Also the outro is so good!

Yesterday Today’ starts off with some playful flute. This is such a feel-good song. The tinkling piano brings this song to a whole new level.

I was very surprised by the intro of ‘Motel’ after the soft ending of ‘Yesterday Today’. Good god, if I don’t find both ‘Motel’ and ‘Badu Curse’ in Spotify’s ‘Sexiest K-grooves’, I’ll be very upset. What a smooth song. I mean with the lyrics ‘Let’s go to the motel, I don’t have to know your name’, what do you expect.

F.U.’ goes HARD. The song brings your heartbeat up with both the rap and the beat. After listening to ‘F.U.’ I feel like I just ran a marathon. It doesn’t give you any space to breathe. It’s fire.

The last song of ‘Dream Catcher’ is the Zoey Piano Remix of ‘Peach’. If you thought ‘Peach’ was already a perfect song, well, you haven’t heard this version. Stunning. The original version of ‘Peach’ was released in 2018 on Yoon Mi-rae’s solo album ‘Gemini 2’.

Overall, a beautiful EP. The amount of acoustic instruments throughout this EP pleasantly surprised me. Usually I feel like the use of real instruments brings a more organic, more full sound.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be listening to this album until the end of time.
