Album Review: WayV – Awaken The World

OT21’s around the globe are being spoiled this year with incredible content and music, and as a NCTzen/WayZenNi I’m here for it.

WayV just dropped their first full album ‘Awaken The World’, and as many of you I was also shocked and excited with the clips of the members and the concept in general. We have been getting high quality visuals for the last six months. Can we get any luckier?

Awaken The World

The title track ‘Turn Back Time’ opens up this release with an EDM sound mixed with a touch of trap and a bass that had me jamming from start to end. The chorus was IT in this song, Ten and Lucas’ raspy and deep voices were super cool, and the bridge is just exquisite.

Watch the MV below.

Opening up with heavy trap beats we have ‘Bad Alive’, this tracks’ layering and mixing are remarkable. There is a lot happening in this song, we get a siren sound mixed with bass and the members’ vocals on top, seems like a lot? It isn’t, WayV’s sound is like this, diverse, experimental and unique, LEGENDARY.

EDM starts off ‘Unbreakable’, this song is heavily hip-hop influenced and I loved how they found the perfect balance between the vocals and the rapping. We get the best of both worlds mixed with a track that feels mysterious, unique and futuristic.

In a change of beat and style we have ‘After Midnight’, this almost pop-ballad has some house music elements in it, mixed with bass and some great harmonization. I loved Kun’s vocals in this track, and XiaoJun’s high note towards the end is just majestic.

Interlude: Awaken The World’ screams WayV everywhere. It mixes sounds from the East and the West, layered with electronic beats, and creates a unique sound; WayV’s sound.

An acoustic guitar, and a killer lazy rapping opens ‘Only Human’. This song is performed by a sub-unit including Lucas, Yang Yang, WinWin and Hendery. It is super soft but has that electronic sound I particularly love and what makes it even better is the fact that Hendery co-wrote it.

Deep bass opens up ‘Domino’ and leaves a strong impression with the flow, rhythm and vocals. It has a more urban vibe and the rapping is killer in this track!.

Up From Here’ is a bop, the progression of the beats in this track and the bass behind the vocal line was amazing. I just love the happy feeling of this song.

We get an up-beat pop song with ‘Electric Hearts’. This track starts off with Ten’s vocals and progresses to become the perfect nightclub dance track. It’s chill, super cool and will make you want to go clubbing. The rap parts were written by Hendery and Yang Yang, and this makes this song even better.

Stand By Me’ puts an end to this album, and it is an end-of-concert anthem. I can clearly picture the audience moving their arms side to side to the rhythm of this song. This song is the perfect closure for this incredible album.

Make sure to listen to this full release below, and go and stream WayV’s videos, they are incredible.
