Actor Spotlight: Kim Hee-Ae

Our next Actor Spotlight is about none other than Kim Hee-Ae. This absolute icon has been in the industry since 1984 and has both popular and critical acclaim.

Let’s take a closer look at some of her most famous roles!

Debut

Her debut came in the film ‘The First Day of the Twentieth Year’ written and directed by Jo Myeong-hwa. She was only seventeen at the time.

In 1986 she discovered her love for the small screen and started filming dramas like ‘A Woman’s Heart’, ‘Terms Of Endearment’ and ‘Forget Tomorrow’ in the next couple of years.

For her portrayal in ‘A Woman’s Heart’ she won Best New Actress for KBS Drama Awards, Our Star Awards and the 23rd Baeksang Arts Awards. That’s no small feat. Unfortunately I could hardly find any information about the series at all.

We particularly loved her performance in the drama ‘Secret Affair’ which you can read more about here.

Pretty much from the start, she’s had some amazing diverse roles and quite a bit of success as well.

Daesangs

Her first Daesang she won in 1991 for her roles in ‘Beyond the mountain’ and ‘Sons and Daughters’. The latter takes a closer look at how treatment of sons and daughters differentiates.

The second one she won for the K-drama ‘My Husband’s Woman’ where she took on a sexier role than usual. The drama came out in 2007.

Her most recent Daesang was for the role in the hit drama ‘The World Of The Married’. I watched the first episode during our Live Tweet event and it was a wild ride.

Filmography

Kim Hee-Ae only did a couple of films until 1993, where she took a 21 year break between her 1993 film ‘The 101st Proposition’ and the 2014 film ‘Thread of Lies’.

In that break she mostly worked on series and commercials.

Her most recent film is the 2019 ‘Moonlit Winter’ which has been on my list for a while. It looks like a beautiful portrayal of first love between two women who are now adults with their own families.

In essence, Kim Hee-Ae has a very interesting diverse career which is definitely worth looking in to. She plays real women with so many different angles and aspects, fully embodying them to be as honest as they can be.
