[Review] The Lie We Lived In

It has been a while since we watched BL, and after doing some research, we decided to dive into a 2026 production filled with tension, secrets and the fear of losing someone. Let’s talk about ‘The Lie We Lived In’.

Written by Jeong Min-seong and directed by Son Tae-gyum, ‘The Lie We Lived In’ is a thriller romance that follows a contract killer and a man who gets caught up in his dangerous world. As feelings begin to develop between them, their growing connection becomes both their greatest comfort and their biggest weakness.

Seo I Do (Kim Seung Beom) is a contract killer who receives a new mission: find Heo Dong Hwa (Lee Jeong Ho) and eliminate him. Before he can carry it out, however, he receives a new order, forcing him to put the mission on hold and keep Dong Hwa hostage while gathering information from him.

Things take an unexpected turn when Chu Tae Jeong (Kim Kyung Min) shows up and mistakes I Do for Dong Hwa’s brother, whom he has not seen since high school. Tae Jeong explains that he has arranged to stay with Dong Hwa for a week while his own apartment is being prepared.

With an unexpected guest now in the picture, I Do finds himself in a rather complicated situation.

Finding Balance

Unable to prevent Tae Jeong from staying at the house, I Do decides to take advantage of the misunderstanding and pretend to be Dong Hwa’s brother. Believing that he is reunited with his old friend, Tae Jeong quickly becomes playful and begins embracing the closeness they once shared.

As they spend more time together, an unexpected tension starts building between I Do and Tae Jeong. Day by day, their relationship grows more complicated, and their growing attraction makes it increasingly difficult for I Do to keep up his act.

Throughout their time living together, I Do tries to conceal his true identity. However, Tae Jeong begins noticing inconsistencies and differences between the childhood friend he remembers and the person now living with him.

Despite these suspicions, their connection continues to deepen. At the same time, I Do’s priorities begin to shift. What started as a straightforward mission becomes increasingly complicated as he questions whether he can, or even wants to see it through.

As I Do’s carefully constructed world begins to crumble and Tae Jeong edges closer to the truth, he must decide whether to complete his mission or risk everything for the person who has unexpectedly become important to him.

A Romance Built on Tension

‘The Lie We Lived In’ feels very much like a stage play, with its small cast and focused setting allowing the story to concentrate on the tension between its central characters.

Rather than relying on a large number of characters or constantly changing locations, the drama places its leads and their evolving relationship at the centre of the story. We get to see them gradually reassess their priorities and become increasingly willing to protect one another, even as the lies surrounding them threaten to tear everything apart.

What makes their relationship particularly compelling is the contrast between the circumstances that bring them together and the feelings that eventually develop. With I Do hiding his identity and struggling with his mission, every moment of closeness carries an additional layer of uncertainty.
