Meet Hana. She’s a perfectly normal person. Teacher by day, tiny dog by night – wait, what!?
Today we’re reading ‘A Good Day to Be a Dog’, a romance WebToon with a cursed (but cute!) twist by Lee Hey. It’s already completed and there’s been buzz for a while now about an upcoming drama adaptation (possibly delayed because, you know… the plague happened).
A Good Day to Be a Dog
Hana’s family has an ancestor problem. While others’ were out there saving the country or just trying not to die before turning 30 (hey, medieval times were tough), theirs managed to insult a spirit. The spirit cursed them, so that after they kiss someone for the first time, they turn into a dog every night. The way to break it, is to simply kiss the same person a second time!
‘Simple’, of course, is off the menu for Hana, who drunkenly kissed the wrong coworker. You see, Mr. Seo Jin, happens to be terribly afraid of dogs (even reaaally tiny ones!). Oops. The lesson here is, don’t get drunk and kiss your coworkers cause ancient family curses will mess up your life. Or, you know, it would make stuff awkward at the office.
In order to get her second kiss and stop transforming every night, she decides to discreetly help him overcome his fear. What ensues is the cutest, purest romance, with some hilarity thrown in for good measure.
The verdict
I cannot overstate how good this WebToon is. The romance is fluffy without being cheesy, the art is attractive and colourful, and the characters demonstrate actual growth *gasp*. They’re also having healthy discussions about their relationships and we see serious supportive-family moments? Sign me up!
When I first read the plot of ‘A Good Day to be a Dog’ I was a little skeptical because of the absurdity of the idea. Boy was I wrong. The writer does a brilliant job of incorporating that fantasy element into a modern setting; She provides enough backstory and actually addresses the logistics of how aspects of the curse function, which is refreshing. It’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine when all manner of things are just explained with “it’s magic! Woo!”. That’s just lazy storytelling.
I am super excited for the upcoming drama, and I hope it does justice to this memorable and beautiful story. Plus, it’s relatively short and already completed, so you can binge away!
