It’s International Women’s Day and we wanted to put some of our favorite leading ladies in the spotlight with our top 5 K-drama heroines that will have your back. These female characters were outstanding and completely badass! Let’s start:
Number 1: Bong Soon from Strong Woman Do Bong Soon
Bong Soon is not only a literal superhero in terms of god-like strength, but she’s here to subvert every stereotype. She works hard to achieve her dreams but she will not sit idle in the face of injustice. She grows to learn that being strong doesn’t mean she can’t be a girl, and eventually stops worrying whether showing her true strength will intimidate those around her. All kinds of empowerment here! She’s the one who saves her friend, the day, catches the bad guy, and gets the guy.
Number 2: AeShin and Hina from Mr. Sunshine
This show has merits for many many things, but today let’s focus on the exceptional job the writers did of creating well-rounded, independent, self-reliant women who aren’t afraid to stand up for themselves and what they believe in. AeShin and Hina are not the type to run away from danger; they are clever, and they speak up when they disagree with what’s going on.
Number 3: Lee Ji-an from My Mister
Lee Ji-an does not have the easiest life and it shows in the way that she had to toughen up. The fact that despite all of her hardships she still managed to take care of not only herself, but also of her brother and her grandmother shows that her love for her family runs deep. She’ll do no matter what it takes to keep them safe. We love this multi-faceted personality.
Number 4: Kim Bok Joo from Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
Kim Bok Joo is a college student who is trying to figure out life while following her dreams. Inspired by the life of the Olympic Medallist Jang Mi-Ran, this drama shows how strength can come in various ways. Kim Bok Joo is physically strong (obviously) but there’s also a strength of character that shows in how she pursues her dream and how she sticks up for her fellow students.
Number 5: Han Yeo-jin from Secret Forest (aka Stranger)
Han Yeo-jin is an amazing detective and will stop at no cost to find out the truth behind all of the intrigue. She does a damn good job at finding out what the truth is while also holding on to this little bit of childishness. She’s not just one thing and that’s why we love her. I literally cannot wait for the second season to drop.
