sucozy released his second mini-album ‘From a distance’ towards the end of May and we were able to ask him some questions about this much anticipated release.
From A Distance
This mini-album is all about anger in its many shapes and sizes.
sucozy: “Some people say anger gives them the drive to work harder. But for me, when I’m overwhelmed by anger, I become paralyzed and can’t do anything. All I can do is try to escape it. So for me, anger is something that either helps me regulate my mind—or completely prevents me from doing so.”
According to the album description sucozy poses himself as the object of observation rather than the observer. “The core inspiration behind the album itself was me: my own experiences. For me, 2024 was a year filled with anger. I spent a lot of energy trying to manage that emotion.”
“I believed that by understanding how I relate to emotion, I could more effectively release myself from it. And eventually, I was able to stop being consumed by my anger. That’s why the album is titled ‘From a Distance’, and the lead single is called ‘Wash Away’—a reflection of emotions that disappear when you let them flow away, like water.”
“Of course, when I was actually in the middle of those emotions, I often felt overwhelmed and unable to control myself. But time has a way of healing. I’ve gotten better at shortening the amount of time it takes me to process and move past things.”
“These days, there are a lot of things happening in South Korea, and I try not to get too swept up in the chaos. Seeing myself as a third party helps with that, too.”
“I didn’t want it to sound too typical—like the cliché of screaming and headbanging to heavy metal (though I do like that too; Slipknot was once my idol).”
“I tried to be as honest as possible with the lyrics, while still choosing carefully refined words. ‘Planted in Fire’ is the track where my anger is expressed most directly. You can find the official audio on my YouTube channel—with subtitles if you’d like to follow along.”
Can you tell us a little about the album cover?
“The cover photo was taken during my honeymoon in June 2024. My wife took the picture. We traveled to the Faroe Islands, and we stayed in an Airbnb that was actually a ship docked at the harbor. The photo was taken on that ship.”
“It’s a photo both of us really love, and even before I began planning the EP, I knew I wanted to use it as the next album cover. Although it wasn’t taken with that purpose in mind, I thought it perfectly captured the mild yet rock-inspired tone I was aiming for—so I used it without hesitation.”
“By the way, if anyone reading this is planning a trip to Northern Europe, I highly recommend visiting the Faroe Islands. It’s absolutely breathtaking.”
Indie Rock and Cannibalism
The album is more rock inspired than his previous EP ‘! Interjection’. “Starting early in 2024, I began listening to a lot of indie rock, which made me want to incorporate more guitar-driven arrangements into my own music. Instead of polished, puzzle-like arrangements, I wanted a rougher, rawer sound. The biggest challenge was that I had to practice guitar a lot more, because I’m not great at playing. I think I did the best I could with the skills I had—and while it could’ve been even rawer, I’m satisfied with the result.”
The two tracks ‘Meet Me Halfway’ and ‘Wash Away’ are the two title tracks of this EP. “’Meet Me Halfway,’ the first track and sub-title track, was released earlier in February. It also has an indie rock feel, which made it the perfect opener for the EP.”
“The main title track ‘Wash Away’ was a much harder decision. As I’ve said, I love all the tracks on this album—and I honestly wanted every one of them to be a title track. But I had to choose. In the end, ‘Wash Away’ best captured the core theme of this project: the repeated cycle and inner conflict of being angry, then calming down, only to be angry again. That’s why it became the title track.”
Halfway through the release we get the single ‘Silent Rite’. This was inspired by the book ‘Proof of Gu’ by Choi Jinyoung.
What was it about the book that inspired you?
“’Proof of Gu’ is about two lovers—Gu and Dam. After Dam dies, Gu eats Dam’s corpse. The depiction is quite graphic and grotesque for some people.
I once watched a YouTube video called “Why don’t humans eat each other?” One theory it introduced was that viruses, bacteria, and parasites are much more contagious among members of the same species. So cannibalism could increase the risk of infection, making survival harder in nature.
“That got me thinking: maybe Dam eating Gu was a form of self-harm. A desperate, instinctive act born from not knowing how else to prove their love.
To someone who doesn’t understand that love, the act might seem cruel and disgusting. But to someone who does, it could be seen as a tragic, painful expression of devotion—even at one’s own expense.”
“The Korean title of ‘Silent Rite’ is 제의, which refers to a ritual or ceremonial rite. In some cultures, cannibalism has historically been a part of funerary customs. So for Dam, I imagined it as a kind of funeral rite as well.”
The last track ‘Interlude’ keeps the story open for a possible continuation. Do you think we’ll get a ‘From a Distance Part 2’?
“I can’t say for sure, but for now—I’d say probably not.”
“The final track ‘Interlude’ was meant to express that this emotional story isn’t over yet. It’s also a declaration of my intention to keep making music. I’m not sure what that will look like exactly, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve seen more and more friends give up on music. I’ve had moments where it felt overwhelming, too.
If I’d named the final track something like ‘Outro,’ it might’ve felt like I was closing the chapter on my music career. That’s why I called it ‘Interlude’ instead.”
“Making music is still one of the things that brings me joy—and I wanted to express my desire to continue doing it.”

- What were some of the inspirations for the album? 앨범의 영감은 무엇이었나요?
이번 앨범에서 음악적인 영감을 준 요소들은 다양한 인디 락 음악이었습니다. 그리고 앨범 자체에 영향을 준 요소는 제 자신이었고요. 2024년은 저에게 있어 분노의 해였습니다. 그리고 그 감정에서 벗어나고자 노력했고, 그 노력의 방식으로 제가 택한 것은 그 감정을 from a distance(한 걸음 떨어져서) 관찰하는 것이었습니다. 감정을 대하는 저의 방식을 관찰하고 이해한다면 조금 더 효과적으로 분노의 감정에서 벗어날 수 있을거라 생각했고, 결과적으로 분노에 휩싸인 채 힘들어하는걸 그만둘 수 있었죠. 그래서 나온 앨범의 제목이 from a distance이고, 씻고 나면 사라질 감정들이라는 의미에서 타이틀곡 이름이 Wash Away 입니다.
- What does anger signify for you? 분노는 당신에게 어떤 의미인가요?
누군가는 분노가 어떤 일을 열심히 하는데 원동력이 된다고도 하는데요, 저는 분노가 가득 차면 아무런 행동도 하지 못한 채 거기서 벗어나려고 계속 애를 씁니다.
그래서 저에게 있어서 분노는 마음을 다스릴 수 있게 해주는 존재, 혹은 다스리지 못하게 해주는 존재.
- Was it hard to use the emotion in your songwriting? 작곡에 감정을 사용하는 것이 어려웠나요?
쉽지는 않았습니다. 분노를 터트리며 표출하는 방식이 아닌 최대한 멀리서 접근하며 덤덤하게 곡에 담고 싶었기에, 너무 일반적인 느낌은 내고 싶지 않았어요. 예를 들면 분노 표출의 방식으로 헤비메탈을 하면서 헤드뱅잉을 하는 그런것들 말이죠. 물론 그런 것도 좋아하긴 합니다. 한때 slipknot이 제 아이돌이었거든요.
여하튼 그래서 최대한 덤덤한 방식으로 감정에 접근하였고, 가사를 쓰면서 최대한 솔직하게, 하지만 정제된 단어들을 골라서 쓰려고 했어요. <Planted in Fire>에는 제 분노가 가장 솔직하게 담겨있는 곡이기도 합니다. sucozy Youtube 채널에 있는 Official Audio 영상에서 자막을 켜고 보시면 내용을 보실 수 있어요.
- This is your second EP. How do you look back on ‘! Interjection’ after the experience of your second EP? 이번이 두 번째 EP입니다. 두 번째 EP를 경험한 후 ‘! 인터젝션’을 어떻게 돌아보시나요?
최선을 다했고, 당시엔 만족스러운 결과물이었지만 지금 돌아보면 아쉬운 부분도 많습니다. 하지만 조금 부족한 점들이 오히려 더 매력이 될 수도 있겠죠. 저는 제 모든 곡을 좋아하지만 개인적으로는 ‘! Interjection’ 앨범에서 숨은 명곡으로 ‘Disappear’를 뽑고싶네요.
- Can you tell us a little about the album cover? 앨범 커버에 대해 조금 알려주실 수 있나요?
앨범 커버는 제가 2024년 6월에 신혼여행을 가서 찍은 사진이에요. 아내가 찍어주었고, Faroe Island에 갔는데, 거기에 항구에 정박해있는 배를 숙소로 쓰는 airbnb가 있더라구요. 그래서 그 배 위에서 찍은 사진입니다. 저나 아내나 정말 좋아하는 사진인지라 앨범을 구상하기도 전부터 다음 EP의 앨범커버로 써야겠다고 생각했어요.
미리 염두에 두고 찍은건 아니지만 이번 앨범이 추구하는 rock스러움과 적당히 마일드한 분위기에도 잘 어울리기에 고민없이 채택했습니다.
여담으로, 혹시나 북유럽 여행을 계획중에 있는 분이 계시다면 Faroe island에 꼭 가보세요. 정말 너무 멋진 곳입니다.
- You went for a more rock inspired theme for this EP. Did that feel like a big change? Or did it come naturally? 이번 EP에서는 록에서 영감을 받은 테마를 선택하셨습니다. 큰 변화처럼 느껴졌나요? 아니면 자연스럽게 나온 건가요?
자연스러웠습니다. 도전이었던 부분은 제가 기타를 직접 쳐야하기에 기타연습을 열심히 해야했어요. 저는 기타를 잘 못치거든요.
24년 초부터 인디락 음악들을 정말 많이 들었습니다. 그러다보니 자연스레 기타 사운드를 편곡에 많이 활용하고 싶어졌고, 잘 맞춰진 퍼즐같은 정제된 편곡이 아닌 조금 더 러프한 날것의 사운드를 쓰고 싶었어요. 더 날것의 사운드였어도 좋았겠지만, 지금 수준에서 제가 할 수 있는 최선으로 결과물이 나왔다고 생각합니다.
- In your album description you wrote: “the album approaches emotion not through outburst, but through observation—at a measured distance.” Is it easier to have some distance when writing about such an explosive feeling? 앨범 설명에서 이렇게 썼습니다: “앨범은 폭발을 통해 감정에 접근하는 것이 아니라 관찰을 통해 측정된 거리에서 감정에 접근합니다.” 이렇게 폭발적인 감정에 대해 글을 쓸 때 어느 정도 거리를 두는 것이 더 쉬운가요?
처음엔 어려웠습니다. 하지만 저는 무슨 일이든 객관적으로, 그리고 약간은 비관적인 시선으로 바라보려고 해요. 그렇다고 모든 일을 안좋게 생각하는건 아니지만 제 스스로 기대치를 낮추는 그런 행동이랄까요. 그러다보니 제 자신을 타인처럼 바라보는 행위는 어느정도 익숙했기에 금방 적응하고 감정을 밖에서 바라볼 수 있었습니다.
물론 분노하는 그 순간 자체에는 그 감정에 빠져서 스스로 제어하기 어려운 상황들도 있었지만, 시간이 많은 일을 해결해주잖아요? 그래서 그 일의 해결을 위한 시간을 점점 단축시켜가는데 성공했습니다.
요즘 south korea에 정말 많은 일들이 있는데요, 이런 국가적 일들에도 너무 휩쓸리지 않으려고 계속 스스로를 타인처럼 바라보는 편이에요.
- You chose two title tracks for this release. What was that decision process like? How did you end up picking those two? 이번 발매를 위해 두 개의 타이틀곡을 선택하셨습니다. 그 결정 과정은 어땠나요? 어떻게 그 두 곡을 선택하게 되었나요?
우선 1번 트랙이자 서브타이틀곡인 <Meet Me Halfway>는 지난 2월 먼저 발매가 된 곡입니다. 이 곡도 인디락 성향을 띄고 있다고 생각하여 이번 앨범의 첫 곡으로 가장 적합하다고 생각했어요.
그리고 2번 트랙이자 메인타이틀곡 <Wash Away>는 정말 많은 고민끝에 정해졌습니다. 저는 제 모든 음악을 좋아한다고 말씀드렸잖아요? 이번 앨범에서도 모든 곡을 타이틀로 하고 싶은 욕망이 있었습니다. 하지만 그럴 수 없으니 많은 고민 끝에 이번 앨범의 주제를 가장 잘 이야기 해주는 <Wash Away> 를 골랐어요. 분노하고 사그러들기를 반복하는 굴레와 번뇌에 대해 이야기하는 곡만큼 이번 앨범을 잘 대변하줄 수 있는 곡이 없다고 생각했습니다.
- What was it about ‘Proof of Gu’ that inspired you to write ‘Silent Rite’?
‘Proof of Gu’의 내용은 ‘Gu’와 ‘Dam’이 연인이었는데 ‘Dam’이 죽자 ‘Gu’가 ‘Dam’의 시체를 먹는 이야기예요. 생각보다 상세히 묘사되어있는 부분이 있어서 고어하고 그로테스크하다고 생각하는 사람도 있습니다.
예전에 유튜브에서 <인간은 왜 식인을 하지 않을까?>라는 주제의 영상을 본 적이 있어요. 식인을 하지 않는 이유중 하나로 ‘바이러스, 세균, 기생충 등은 같은 종 내에서 훨씬 더 쉽게 감염된다. 따라서 식인행위는 질병 감염에 취약하여 자연계에서 살아남기 어렵다’ 라는 가설이 나옵니다.
그래서 ‘담’이 ‘구’를 먹는 행위는 일종의 자해라고 생각했습니다. 너무나도 사랑하기에 어떻게 이 사랑을 증명할지 갈피를 잡지 못해서 본능적으로 하는 행위라고 느꼈어요. 그러기에 이 사랑을 모르는 사람이 보았을 때는 단순히 잔인하고 역겨운 행위라고 생각하겠지만, 이 사랑을 아는 사람에게는 자신을 해쳐가면서 자신의 사랑을 보여주고자 하는 처절한 증명으로 보일 수 있다고 생각했습니다.
그리고 ‘Silent Rite’의 한국어 제목은 ‘제의’ 인데요, 이는 제사의 의식이라는 의미를 갖고 있습니다. 과거 식인행위가 장례 풍습으로 있던 부족들도 있기에, ‘담’에게 있어서는 일종의 제사 의식이기도 하다고 생각했습니다.
- The last track ‘Interlude’ keeps the story open for a possible continuation. Do you think we’ll get a ‘From a Distance Part 2’? 마지막 트랙 ‘Interlude’는 이야기를 계속 이어갈 수 있게 해줍니다. ‘From a Distance Part 2’를 얻을 수 있을까요?
아직 장담할 수 없지만, 우선은 아니라고 말씀드리고 싶네요. 마지막 트랙 Interlude는 이 감정의 이야기는 끝나지 않는다는 의미를 갖고 있기도 하고, 제가 음악을 지속하겠다는 의지를 보여주는 곡이기도 합니다. 그것이 어떤 형태로 될지는 모르겠지만 말이죠. 나이를 먹어가면서 주변에 음악을 그만두는 친구들도 많고, 저 역시도 가끔 버겁다고 느낄 때가 있어요. 그래서 마지막 곡을 interlude가 아닌 outro같은 제목으로 한다면 제가 음악을 그만두게 될 것만 같은 기분이 들었어요. 그래서 interlude로 했습니다.
저는 이 일이 제가 즐겁게 할 수 있는 일중 하나입니다. 그래서 계속 해내고 싶다는 의지를 담아보았어요.
