The main couple in K-Dramas usually gets most of the spotlight. That certainly makes sense since the entire story is about them. However, there tends to be a very cute secondary couple that progresses their own relationship in the background of that K-Drama. And sometimes they’re the absolute cutest and can even steal the spotlight!
So without further ado, here are some of our favorite secondary couples from K-dramas.
Because This Is My First Life – Woo Soo-Ji and Ma Sang-Goo
This duo doesn’t exactly start off on the right foot, but when they make up it is utterly adorable. We have Soo-Ji is a woman who’s confident in her sexuality, she’s working hard surrounded by utter sexists but she’s making it work for her. Then we have Sang-Goo who’s the opposite of toxic masculinity and we’re 100% here for it. This couple finds it stride in mutual respect towards each other and genuine care.
Reply 1988 – Jung-Bong and Mi-Ok/ Maggie
To be fair, this drama had a ton of secondary couples that made us laugh and cry and feel the feels. While the fateful love story of Shin-Woo and Bo-Ra was honestly, all of the things I mentioned, and all the parents were hilarious and adorable, I felt that the couple that really stood was Jung-Bong and Mi-Ok. We came for the cute AF and super romantic storyline but we stayed for the supportive relationship! The cranes! The letters! The not-so-scary father! This romance evolving in the background was the gift that kept on giving!
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryo – 10th Prince Wang Eun and Soon-Deok
Watching Seon-Dok, the strong General’s daughter, swoon over the cute and frankly fragile Prince Eun was only marred by his complete lack of interest. Their marriage is one of convenience, but as he grows to love her slowly, they become closer and their relationship is just too pure and precious for words! So when their blissful lives are cut short because this was that kind of drama, our hearts were ripped out and crushed into fine powder.
Why did this drama have to be so damn tragic? Can’t we always get happy fictitious endings like in ‘Love in the Moonlight? No? Ok.
Warrior Baek Dong Soo – Cheon / Ga Ok / Gwang Taek
Another historical drama, so you can probably guess just how happy of an ending this love triangle had. Gwang Taek is Dong-Soo’s mentor, and Cheon is the best character in the show the leader of the baddies. Written to mirror the paths the protagonists followed, showing how their masters also went from being best friends to sworn enemies, it somehow ended up overshadowing the main plot in some ways. This was particularly true in the romance aspect, as the emotional depth of the storyline and the chemistry between the characters was really captivating. The amazing theme song certainly helped, as did the fact that the main storyline focused far more on the bromance than on the romance of things.
Crash Landing On You (Seo Dan and Seung Joon (aka Alberto Gu))
‘Crash Landing On You’ left us with a bittersweet end for this couple and most of us ended up in tears. From one side we have Seung Joon, a guy with a problematic life that escapes to North Korea, and then we have Seo Dan, a North Korean heiress and cellist. These two characters start off as acquaintances but circumstances lead them to develop feelings for each other, understand each other and protect each other. Do we need anything else for a good relationship?
I just have to say, this power couple deserved a better end.
Descendants of the Sun (Myeong Joo and Dae Young)
‘Descendants of the Sun’ was a massive success back in 2016. Everyone loved the main couple (I liked them too) but Myeong Joo and Dae Young had so much history, respect and love for each other, that back then I just preferred their romance a lot more .
Their story was beautifully written and the chemistry between both actors was extraordinary, we got a lot of sweet, sad and also hilarious moments from this duo and I just loved them.
Goblin (Sunny and Grim Reaper)
This love story was marked by tragedy and fate. Sunny and the Grim Reaper’s sad past lives had us all in tears with bittersweet moments, but also gave us some funny and cute ones that many will remember vividly.
What I loved the most was that this couple definitely proved that some love transcends time and life.
Search: WWW (Scarlett and Ji Hwan)
Scarlett is a powerful and confident professional woman, Ji Hwan is a rookie actor with a lot of talent. These two people meet in the most unlikely situations and we get one of the most sweet, adorable and heartfelt couples of all times.
I particularly loved how Ji Hwan was so respectful of Scarlett’s actions and decisions, and at the same time he was very forward, showing his true feelings with his eyes, actions and that cute little smile.
I loved every single moment of this relationship. It was nothing but pure, honest and likeable to the very end.
