[Review] Smugglers

We’re back with a new film review and this time we watched the 2023 Korean film ‘Smugglers’. Let’s dive right in!

Smugglers

‘Smugglers’ is action crime film directed by Ryoo Seung-wan. He also co-wrote the script together with Kim Jeong-yeon.

The film follows the lives of a handful of haenyeo (women who dive for mollusks and other sealife) as they start being active in the smuggle business during the seventies as a new factory has devastating effects on the mollusks.

At the beginning things go fantastic, but the crime world is no joke, neither is the diving job. One day, customs are on to them and due to their haste a tragic accident occurs.

Overall

This was a solid film, but Google definitely misled me as it introduced me to the film as a Comedy genre. I was waiting for the jokes, but it was all quite serious.

‘Smugglers’ has quite the cast! We get Kim Hye-Soo, Yum Jung-Ah as hanyeo. Go Min-Si as a tea house hostess and Zo In-sung as a smuggle kingpin. Kim Jong-Soo is a customs officers who is absolutely ruthless.

It’s an enjoyable movie with cool diving scenes and solid fight sequences.
