[Review] Officer Black Belt

We’re back with a new film review and this time we watched the brand new ‘Officer Black Belt’. Let’s take a closer look!

Officer Black Belt

The action film was written and directed by Kim Joo-Hwan. He’s also responsible for films like ‘The Divine Fury’, ‘Midnight Runners‘ and ‘Bloodhounds’. All fantastic films balancing the funny with the serious. This movie however, despite having some jokes, does not feel like a comedy at all. This feels like a straight-up action film.

‘Officer Black Belt’ follows our main character Lee Jung-Do played by Kim Woo-Bin (‘Uncontrollably Fond’). He’s a super talented martial artist and a really nice guy. During his job as a delivery guy he helps out when there’s a fight.

There he’s introduced to work of people who monitor ankle bracelets for people on probation. They monitor the batteries and the locations and as soon as the battery reaches 30% they have to call the person so they can go charge it. If they don’t respond they have to go find the person.

Kim Seong-Gyoon plays his mentor Kim Seon-nim and the two get on like a house on fire.

At one point the team gets assigned a new criminal and things get dark real fast.

Overall

This was a cool watch, some of the fight scenes were really well done. I also enjoyed the bromances between all the guys.

However I think there’s a lack of depth in all of the characters portrayed. All the good guys are Good while all the bad guys are Bad.

I also found it disappointing that the movie does not pass the Bechdel Test.
