[Review] MONSTA X – Reason

The boys from MONSTA X are back with their new mini-album ‘Reason’. I’m super stoked, I feel like it’s been a hot minute since we’ve gotten new music from the group. Let’s dive in!

Reason

We start off with the title track ‘Beautiful Liar’. The opening guitars?! Amazing! I really like how they play with the build up of the instrumentals. The vocals feel quite restricted, in the sense that they’re being very controlled about it. It’s an interesting choice, it fits with the concept of toxic love that you can’t let go of. The rap verses, as always, were dope.

I’m obsessed with the harmonies and the abrupt ending. I do wonder what the meaning of the very last part of the MV is. Are we getting a Minhyuk solo next?

‘Daydream’ starts with eerie instrumentals. We’re going haunted circus in a dreamscape. The vocals in this track are on another level. I really dig the beat. I’m absolutely in love with this track. It’s just so incredibly smooth.

Next up is ‘Crescendo’ which gives us a hip-hop based track mixed with traditional Korean instruments geomungo and taepyeongso. The track was composed by Jooheon and frequent collaborator Ye-Yo!. This is such a vibe! The lyrics ‘Let’s get sexy’ undoubtedly fits this group to a T.

Next up

Hyungwon produced ‘LONE RANGER’. We get another super smooth track. I dig the Western vibe, I could totally see this as a music video. I hope they perform this with cowboy hats. Joohoney really went off during his rap verse. The hook is hella catchy.

Following that is ‘DENY’. This one was produced by IM. We’re going smooth R&B with this one. I love their soft vocals and the falsettos. This is such a great listen. It’s so pleasing to the ears.

The last track on the album is ‘It’s Alright’. This tracks feels very old school in it’s beat. The piano in the backing track gives it an elegant flair, as does the brass that is added. I love it. The chanting gets even more bonus points.

Overall ‘Reason’ by MONSTA X is a great mini-album. Go ahead and listen to it here on Spotify.
