[Review] Midnight Runners

This week’s Review is all about the Korean film ‘Midnight Runners’. If you like ‘Extreme Job’ or ‘Police Academy’ definitely keep on reading, because it’ll suit your tastes.

Plot

‘Midnight Runners’ is a 2017 action comedy starring Park Seo-joon and Kang Ha-neul. They’re both students at the National Police University and we follow them as they struggle and succeed. Their friendship is hilarious and honest.

While Hee-yeol (Kang Ha-neul) is an excellent student, Ki-joon (Park Seo-joon) is struggling a bit more. However they manage, and they manage to balance each other out.

One evening, when they asked for a day off from the premises of the University for their ‘love life’, they come across a girl who’s kidnapped. The scenes in the night club with a cameo of 2PM gave me second-hand embarrassment. Despite them meaning it well, it was so hard to watch as they tried to flirt.

Hee-yeol and Ki-joon try to contact the police first, as they were trained in school. However, at the exact same time a business mogul’s son was kidnapped as well, so the entire missing-person’s unit is busy finding them. They don’t have time to find a runaway girl who was abducted.

So, they try to find the girl themselves. Which turns out a bit more complicated and a lot more dangerous than they originally thought. Because of course there’s a mafia gang involved.

For the rest of the plot, I recommend you watch the movie because I don’t want to give too much away.

There are other big names in the film. Actors like Sung Dong-Il and Ko Jun have big roles as well.

Overall

‘Midnight Runners’ was a great film to watch. It was a fantastic balance between comedy (I cracked up a lot) and action. There were some really great fight scenes in the film. The plot is quite straight-forward, no big surprises really.

The amount of heart in this film was something else though. The friendship of the two main characters is wholesome and adorable. There’s quite some bickering involved, but it’s all meant well. Their characters are also quite clear-cut. And I liked how their character arc gets a nice resolution at the end.

Honestly, if you’ve a free night and you want to watch something light-hearted but still with enough plot to keep you entertained, definitely watch this one.
