[Review] Love With Flaws

Today’s review is about a romantic comedy that aired in 2019. This production talks about how being imperfect is the perfect way to be, and the ups and downs of life. Let’s chat about ‘Love With Flaws’.

Written by Ahn Shin-yoo and directed by Oh Jin-seok, this MBC drama uses a lot of slapstick comedy, full of embarrassing moments that lead to misunderstandings.

No Handsome Boys

Oh Yeon-seo (Joo Seo-yeon) is a P.E teacher in a secondary school, she has lived most of her life with her two older step-brothers and her young brother, who always caused issues to her social life for being “too handsome”. Most of her school life she struggled with girls befriending her just to know her older siblings.

From a very young age she decides to date “normal guys” who are average in looks thinking that in that way she won’t have to deal with major issues.

Ahn Jae-hyun (Lee Kang-woo) has known Yeon-seo since school days, however, a misunderstanding made them stop talking to each other. He is very self-centered and cares a lot about his appearance.

They meet again during a school reunion, bringing back all the bad feelings from the past but as time passes and they clear the misconceptions they have about each other and they start having romantic feelings.

Family support

Both leads have very interesting family relationships. From one side, Yeon-seo took the responsibility of her household when her parents passed away, with the support of her two older brothers Joo Won-Jae (Min Woo-hyuk) and Joo Won-suk (Cha In-ha), and between them raised their younger sibling Joo Seo-joon (Kim Jae-yong).

They support and protect each other and without a doubt have each other’s back, I found this relationship very wholesome, one of Yeon-seo’s brothers is a member of the LGBTQ+ community openly and has the support of his family, which is rare to find in many dramas.

Jae-hyun’s family is well-off and have very interesting dynamics, his sister Lee Kang-Hee (Hwang Woo Seul Hye) is in charge of most of the businesses related activities, and he is able to pursue his fashion design passion in secret.

His cousin Lee Min-hyeok (Gu Won) has a very straightforward personality and works as a school nurse in the school where Yeon-seo works. He becomes his rival when he shows interest in her, making their relationship even more complicated.

Easy watch romantic comedy

Love with Flaws’ greatly surprised me with its inclusive plot and writing. The characters were well-balanced and even though the type of comedy wouldn’t be a genre I would be eager to watch, they really balanced it well and made it funny and enjoyable.

I particularly enjoyed the strong friendships the leads had. Park Hyun-soo (Heo Jung-min) is Jae-Hyun’s best friend, he is the CEO of a company and has gotten himself into crazy scenarios just to help him.

The same goes to Kim Mi-kyung (Kim Seul-gi), Seo-yeon’s best friend. She is a very charismatic, lovable and a hilarious character. Their relationship is friendship goals with a lot of wholesome and hilarious moments.
