[Review] Lee Jin Ah – Candy Pianist

Our indie sweetheart Lee Jin Ah is back with her new EP ‘Candy Pianist’.

Candy Pianist

We open the EP with the single the EP is named after. ‘Candy Pianist’ is such a lovely, sugary sweet song. The focus is mostly on the piano and not on the vocals in this one.

Next up is ‘The Wall Blocks Me’. This track is about facing a wall within yourself and the will to keep fighting it until you can climb over or break through. I think you can kind of feel it in the instrumentals, the will to keep going. It has quite a bit of momentum with some really lovely sparser moments.

The third track is the title track ‘Dreamy Alarm’ that came with a brand new music video. I was quite surprised to see Cha Eunwoo from ASTRO in the MV. I had to cackle a little bit when I saw the anime faces, because that’s been all over my TikTok feed lately. The song itself is hella cute and begs for a repeat.

After that we get ‘Noisily Anywhere’. Yoo Hee-yeol, Antenna CEO and soloist Toy co-wrote the lyrics for this one. He’s also singing in the song! Honestly it’s cuteness overload and I would love to see them perform this together on ‘Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook’.

‘Dust’ follows that with something a little gentler, something a bit more fragile. In the album description she wrote that she saw the dust flying around during her bus ride home when the sunshine hit it just so. Inspired by its beauty, she wrote a song about it. The piano in this one might be my favorite so far on this EP.

The last song ‘Awake’ is a collab with label mate Sam Kim. I love their voices together and this is no different. It’s a beautifully soft song that will help you through tough times.

Overall

Lee Jin Ah doesn’t disappoint with ‘Candy Pianist’. As ever, the EP is thoughtful, beautiful and well-produced. Jin Ah has writing and composing credits on each of the songs and honestly, I love her mind.

Go ahead and check out the EP on Spotify!
