[Review] Joonil Jung – Nothing

Joonil Jung released his first EP since 2019. ‘Nothing’ consists of six tracks and has overarching themes of love and heartache. Let’s take a closer look!

Nothing

The opening track is ‘Know each other’. This is a beautiful R&B ballad with stunning instrumentation and Jung’s warm vocal tone. The piano is lovely and light while the strings add depth and dimension. What a lovely – if not super sad if you look at the lyrics – opener.

After that comes the title track ‘Love Again’. We get another stunning ballad that will leave you quite heartbroken. I was moved by the honesty of it all.

The actress Choi Su Ra did a fantastic job in making us a spectator in her loneliness and despair. Both the close framing and the black-and-white were excellent choices.

‘ggug ggug’ follows that with even more devastation. The ballad, while being beautiful, had me pause the album for a bit afterward to process. Together with the music video, I was in tears.

Next up is ‘University’. This is another break-up ballad but with a slightly lighter tone in instrumentation. I enjoyed the addition of the synths as it created a more diverse sound.

We get another music video with ‘Curse’. The minimalist instrumentation really helps deliver this poetry-like track. The words are mostly accompanied by an acoustic guitar with a piano only joining in after a couple of minutes. The slight pause after about a minute, feels almost like a long inhale. What an incredible track.

We get Choi Su Ra from the first music video to reprise her role, though here she is joined by Kim Jae Wook.

When ‘Rune’ started I had a little bit of a musical whiplash. It’s the first track on the album that has a fast(-ish) tempo and an alt rock feel to it. It’s an interesting way to close the album and I thoroughly enjoyed ending on a more hopeful note.

Also a quick shout-out to the stunning album cover by Min Byung Hun.
