[Review] Hopeless

We’re back with a new film review and this time we watched the 2023 film ‘Hopeless’. Let’s take a closer look!

Plot

‘Hopeless’ follows the rather hopeless life of the young Yeon-gyu. His step-father is abusive and at school he’s frequently bullied. His family is short for cash and after retaliating on one of his bullies, the need for money is even bigger.

The local gangster decides to give him a hand, which evolves into Yeon-gyu working for him. Things escalate – as they are wont to do in mafia films.

All Yeon-gyu wants to do is make enough money so he can take his mother and move to The Netherlands.

Overall

‘Hopeless’ is honestly a really intriguing film. The characters are extremely well played. We have Hong Xa-Bin as the lead. You might recognize him from ‘Moving’ and the recently released film ‘Escape’. He does a fantastic job at portraying the layered character.

There’s also singer-songwriter BIBI. This is only her second role in a feature film and honestly I’m very impressed by her. She plays the step-sister of Yeon-gyu.

And of course we also have Song Joon-ki as the local gangster Chi-geon. An impressive performance, as always.

I wish that this film had tackled Yeon-gyu and Chi-geon a bit differently. They had incredibly chemistry together and I wish we could have had a bit more depth and backstory to their characters.

However, it is still a very gripping film, so I would still recommend a watch.
