[Review] Chung Ha – Alivio

Our queen Chung Ha is back with her latest mini-album ‘Alivio’. We’re beyond stoked because it feels like it’s been ages. I loved this look from the album description: “This album, which combines the courage to let go of the past and the determination to make a new beginning, will be an important milestone that shows how Chung Ha’s musical worldview has evolved.” Let’s take a closer look!

Alivio

We start off with the track ‘Creepin’’. This is an R&B based track co-produced by Thùy who is absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the really sick beat and the balance between verses and chorus. It’s a cool track.

Next up is ‘Salty’ featuring Sunmi. This is a newtro track with a lot of retro sounds and some House thrown in. I love both Sunmi and Chung Ha so this collab is quite frankly to die for. I love the synergy between their vocals and musical identities. This is a lot of fun and the chorus is insanely catchy. A bop!

‘Loyal’ is a cool track with backing vocals performed by Ashley Alisha. I love how smooth and effortlessly this track flows. Divine!

We finally arrive at the title track ‘STRESS’. We’re going for an uptempo dance track with some House and a lot of energy. I love how quintessential Chung Ha this feels. We’re all vogueing at the club.

Also her teacher outfit? Office siren core dreams <3

‘Beat of my heart’ is a drum and bass track with soft synths and a dreamy atmosphere. The beat is really cool and I could totally see this play at a club. The chorus is amazing and I love the dynamic between the harder verses and the dreamy chorus.

Next up is ‘Even Steven (Happy Ending)’. The ‘Even Steven’ part stands for fairness and a determination to be free from wounds and obsessions of the past. We’re getting a strong bass, energetic guitars and some power vocals.

The second title track of the album is ‘Thanks for the memories’. We’re going for a rock moment which is a lot of fun and she does it so well. I love that we get some more of her lower register in the opening.

The closing track is ‘Still a Rose’ and this intro caught me quite off guard. We literally open with a melody from Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’. It definitely leaves a strong impression. I enjoyed this line from the song description: “it’s is more than just music. It is a song that awakens the beauty and strength hidden within us, and makes us realize that we can still shine no matter what trials we face.”
